Career center offers help
Teaches skills, offers information to job hunters
By FRANK SHAW
"We re here to help students
and alumni who are in the
process of deciding what kind of
careers they want to pursue and
to help them find employment,"
says Larry Smith, head of the
University's Career Planning
and Placement Center.
But, he says, "We are not an
employment agency."
To help students decide what
they want to do, the placement
center offers a variety of work
shops, classes and seminars
A "Job Outlook for the 80s”
seminar deals with the expected
job growth in specific industries
and how those predictions
affect students

The “Career Planning
Seminar” is designed for
students with tentative or un
declared majors. It discusses
skills, activities and interests to
help students make career
decisions
The placement center even
offers a class for credit, Coun
seling 199
The class is designed for un
dergraduates making career
decisions. It deals with a
student's abilities, interests and
values, the social and psy
chological characteristics of the
work environment and skills for
locating resources
The best time to meet people
and make job contacts is during
the sophomore year. Smith
says A student s freshman year
is too early because the
student’s main concern is
adjusting to University life, he
says
Career decisions should not
be made lightly, Smith says
“The people who have made
decisions about what they want
to do will have to test them.”
Students who are undecided
about what career they want to
pursue should use some of the
standardized interest tests and
inventories. Smith says Among
these tests is the Strong
Campbell Career Interest In
ventory, a computerized career
identification system and a self
directed search.
Undecided students should
also participate in career in
formation fairs and afternoon
on-the-job sessions, Smith
says
These, programs give
students an idea of what types
of jobs and careers they might
be interested in If a student

thinks he might be interested in
hotel management, for exam
ple, he or she could participate
in a trip to Valley River Inn for an
introduction to that career
Another opportunity, for
students to gain first-hand ex
perience in their career field
comes through various student
groups and organizations
Smith says campus living
groups can provide positions of
leadership, improve organiza
tional skills and give training in
financial management
When should you begin your
job search after you've got all
this experience and advice?
Smith recommends that seniors
begin actively seeking em
ployment during the first quarter
of their senior year The
placement center offers work
shops, job search strategies,
resume writing classes and
other classes designed to ena
ble students to find themselves
jobs.
One of the most popular and
useful resources is the campus
interview program The
program gives students early
experience in being interviewed
and a chance at employment A
company brochure file contains
information on specific compa
nies that students can use as
background information before
their interviews.
Other resources available at
the placement center include:
• A job vacancy book, cont
aining full information on
available jobs
• Placement workshops that
cover job search strategies, re
sume writing and interview
skills.
• Placement seminars that
provide assistance in focusing
on a specific job, writing letters,
identifying potential employers,
and developing interview skills
"Just ask and you'll get the
help," Smith says
