receives alumni gift
The University's education
school has received a $25,000
gift annuity for its summer
program for gifted children from
Robert and Ruth Walker of
Grants Pass,
The Walker's gift, which will
be distributed as a fixed annual
allowance, will go toward the
future support of the Summer
Enrichment Program for Gifted
and Talented Students, accord
ing to Clifton Cole, director of
planned giving for the University
Foundation.
When the money becomes
available, it will be used for
scholarships for economically
disadvantaged students, says
George Sheperd, professor of
education and program coor

The summer program is self
supporting and has very limited
resources for scholarships, and
many qualified students have
been unable to attend.

established a $75,000 annuity
trust to meet the library's most

LERC receives grant
The University Labor Educa
tion and Research Center,
which trained 2,000 persons in
identifying and correcting
hazards in the workplace last
year, will continue its work with
a new $70,000 grant.
This is the fourth year LERC
has been funded by the federal
Occupational Safety and Health
Administration, according to
Emory Via, the center's director.
The money, from OSHA's
New Directions-' program,
supports LERC's Occupational
Safety and Health Project
Training is offered throughout
the Northwest.
' We are encouraged by this
new grant, which keeps us
among the top three University
labor programs, nationally,
receiving New Directions'
funds,'' Via says The total sup
port from OSHA over four years
have been $680,000
In addition to training some
2,000 employees of Northwest
firms through 50 workshops and
programs, LERC last year
provided substantial technical
assistance to reduce hazards
for certain high-hazard
groups,” Via says
LERC recently started a ser
ies of taxation workshops ex
ploring the idea that unions are
involved in the political process.
LERC also is planning a work
shop discussing labor and the
media in December
During the past four years,
LERC has held programs for
more than 200 unions and other
organizations to train stewards,
safety committee members and
other officials in identifying and
correcting hazards from toxic
chemicals, physical stress and
machines

Marital studies
mends marriages
Couples who wish to enhance their relationships can find
help and encouragement through the Oregon Marital Studies
Program
"We see couples for both individual therapy and for couple
workshops," says Kendra Summers, graduate student in
clinical psychology who works in the program "Therapy is for
couples who are in distress and workshops are for those
couples who are in trouble and would like to see their
relationship improved "
The program, part of the University psychology
department, will set up an initial meeting to determine
whether the couple needs individual therapy or workshops
If the couple needs individual sessions, the therapist will
develop a special plan to solve the couple's particular
problems
Couples meet weekly for about three months The next
program begins Nov 30 and costs $20
The workshops deal with communication skills, problem
solving skills and how couples can become more supportive
of each other. Couples also are instructed how to maintain
those changes
