Beavers put last spike into Ducks’ season
By Doug Levy
Of th« Emerald
The emotional edge was there
for the Oregon women's vol
leyball team to beat Oregon
State in it's last game of the
season Saturday night
Before the game, Annetta
Ensworth, the only senior on the
Duck squad, was given a warm
farewell salute by her
teammates and fans. Ensworth,
Oregon's team captain, had
suffered a sprained ankle last
week and had to miss the game
Unfortunately, Oregon State
had the physical edge on the
Ducks, winning the match in
three straight games, 15-10,
15-9, 16-14 The loss left
Oregon 4-8 in NorPac league
play, 12-17 on the season On
Friday, the Ducks swept Idaho
16-14. 15-9, 15-2
The Oregon State match,
although only a three-game
affair, was fairly close. In the
first game, the teams were tied
twice, at 5-5 and 7-7, before
OSU scored eight of the next 11
points to subdue Oregon.
However, the Ducks bounced
back in the second game to take
leads of 5-2 and 9-6 Again, the
Beavers rallied, winning the
game's final nine points Then,
in the third game Oregon broke
open a 9-9 deadlock and, paced
by kills by Ronda Dalthorp and
Sue Harbour, burst to a 14-10
lead
But, as has been their ten
dency all year, the Ducks could
not get the big point. OSU ran
off six straight points to end the
game, match, and season for
the Ducks.
“There is nobody you want to
beat worse than Oregon State,"
said a disappointed coach Chris
Voelz, “but this team is too on
and off to hold any intensity.
They lack discipline ”
Voelz was right Too often,
the Ducks suffered collapses
that allowed the Beavers to run
off strings of points One factor
in the Ducks demise was that
reserve setter Sandi Adams,
who had played well the night
before against Idaho, had an off
game
The game was a reversal of
Friday’s win The key to that
victory W9S chances — Oregon
had a lot of them Harbour and
Dalthorp each attempted 25
kills, and Harbour was success
ful on 13 with only one error.
Dalthorp had Six and Stephanie
Tambe five.

ball, victory eluded the Ducks' reach as Oregon ended its season at
home.
