Lallas named acting vice president
University Pres. Paul Olum has named
John Lallas, currently executive dean, as
acting vice-president of administration
while a search committee looks for a re
placement for Ray Hawk, who will vacate
the position in January.
Lallas will assume Hawk's position Jan
1 when Hawk retires after 32 years with the
University.
Lallas says he will serve as both ex
ecutive dean and vice president until
Hawk's replacement is named, probably in
June He says he will not be considered for
the permanent position.
Hawk has served as vice president for
the past 11 years. He served as acting
president during the summer of 1969, as
director of institutional planning and re
search and as dean of men when he first
came to the University in 1950.
"The University owes (Hawk) more than
could easily be measured," Olum says
."During Ray Hawk’s 32 years of service, he
has epitomized the dedication which has
enabled the University to reach its present
level of excellence.
‘ John Lallas has been deeply involved
in institutional planning and administration
at the University for 20 years.'' Olum says
He shares with Ray Hawk a knowledge of
the University which few others can match I
believe he will do a superb job as acting vice
president."
"I'm delighted to serve the University in
this way — even though we ll miss Ray."
Lallas says. "We ll have to delegate out
some things and some things may have to
be put on hold for a bit
The deadline for applications in the
national search for Hawk's successor is
Dec. 31 A committee of 10 will interview
and screen applicants and choose a suc
