    Contreras to resign next term
Alan Contreras, ASUO comptroller
and senior ASUO official, announced
this week he will resign his position
effective Jan. 31
In a letter of resignation submitted
Monday to the ASUO, Contreras said
he announced his decision early so
his successor can learn from him
Contreras said he plans to spend
more time on his law studies
"I must now look forward to the
reality of my grades, my career and my
need for a new challenge or two,” the
letter read
Contreras said he will help ASUO
Pres C.J Balfe with small projects
after he leaves. Contreras does not
plan to seek or accept any major
ASUO positions in his remaining
University years, his letter said
Contreras was an Incidental Fee
Committee member before becoming
ASUO budget director last year He
was promoted to ASUO vice president
of administration and finance when
Jim Edmundson resigned
Bookstore approves purchases
Bookstore improvements totaling
about $12,000 were approved by the
University bookstore board of directors
Tuesday.
The board approved the purchase of
nine cash registers with built-in dis
counting features which will cost about
$7,000 The cash registers were ordered
for the winter term book rush, said Jim
Williams, bookstore manager
The cash registers will automatically
subtract 11 percent from the purchase
price of the book, Williams said, which
means it won't be necessary for the
bookstore to stamp the discounted price
of new books on the inside covers.
The board also approved a plan to
redecorate the T-shirt department for
$5,000 Such a plan has increased sales
at Washington State University and the
University of Arizona, Williams said.
The board also approved a motion
saying no excess working capital exists.
The bookstore’s articles of incorporation
requires any excess working capital be
turned over to the University
The board approved Maria Neese, a
marketing junior, to serve the remaining
term of Mark Burgess, who submitted his
resignation on Oct 25
