Son charged with killing cruel father;
mother charged with hiding the body
ST. HELENS, (AP) - Donna
Whatley’s 18-year-old son is
charged with killing her
husband and she faces a felony
charge for allegedly hiding the
body for four months.
But Whatley says what she
feels most these days is relief,
because her husband can no
longer torment her family.
Bail for young Vincent
Whatley, charged with murder,
was set at $100,000 Tuesday in
the June shooting death of his
father, Seyborne Whatley, 44.
Whatley has not yet entered a
plea to the charge, which
carries a mandatory life
sentence with conviction
Donna Whatley will be
arraigned Nov 22 on a charge
of hindering prosecution but
Columbia County District
Attorney Martin Sells says she
will not be arrested Conviction
on the hindering charge would
carry a maximum penalty of five
years in prison and a $100,000
fine
Whatley was interviewed
Monday by the Longview Daily
News while her son appeared in

She said she is glad the secret
is out.
“We were all beaten and
brutalized,” she said. "The kids
were just terrified of him (the
elder Whatley).
“Everybody says I shouldn’t
talk to anyone But this has got
to come out," Whatley said
Vincent Whatley was arrested
Nov 1 after authorities found
his father s body in a shallow
grave under a floor of a shed on
the family farm in rural Goble
An autopsy showed he had
been shot about five times with
a shotgun and once or twice
with a rifle.
His mother said she was
home when the shooting oc
cured but didn’t see it happen
“I’m not ashamed of
Vincent,” she said, adding she
doubts the abuse could have
been stopped any other way
Whatley said her husband of
22 years, a muscular and reclu
sive man, had grown increa
singly violent in recent years
If the children were too slow
in their farm tasks, her husband
would hit them or hurl wrenches
or boards at them, she claimed
“Every day there was
something," Donna Whatley
recalled. “If we didn’t get hit it
was verbal abuse "
She added that Vincent's
home life affected his school
work; he earned too few credits
to graduate with his class last
year and was back at Rainier
High School this fall.
A Hitler fan who had a roomful
of Nazi souvenirs, Seyborne
Whatley kept his family on the
farm and away from friends and
in later years grew certain that
his wife and sons were discus
sing him whenever they were
together, his wife said
Whatley said she and the boys
felt they had no choice but to
accept the abuse.
"We left him twice — both
times he found us and took us
back and threatened the people
that tried to help us,” she said
Whatley felt uncomfortable
on the family farm even after she
buried her husband
"I don't believe in ghosts,”
she said “But I expected that at
any moment he — my husband
— would come back and get
us.”
After his death, family
members told others the elder
Whatley had gone to California
His death came to light after
Steve Whatley s mother-in-law
grew suspicious and eventually
contacted the Columbia County
sheriff's office
Sells said the entire case had
been presented to the Columbia
County grand jury, which
returned the indictments
against Vincent Whatley and his
mother.
"As far as I know at this point
we re not seeking any other in
dictments,” said Sells "The
grand jury, for whatever
reasons, didn’t feel any other
crimes were committed.”
He declined to discuss
specifics of the case
“I've been through so much
that I'm not afraid for me," said
Whatley. “I want it to be over for
Vincent. Surely people will
understand "
