people, not fragmentation."
"One party is ail we need.
Now, I’m not saying that I should
be the only candidate in that
party, that would be egocen
tric." Even so, "I think I could do
a pretty good job, especially
after 18 years of practice,"
Holden says.
The crisis Holden perceives is
a geometric increase in man’s
destruction of the Earth. The
next 20 years will be ultimately
important in deciding our fate
and will require individual poli
tical action, he says.
Holden says he has been
encouraging people through his
seminars and lectures to run for
office regardless of their
previous political experience.
“If you were to talk to people
on this campus I'm sure that 80
to 90 percent don’t care what is
happening in the political envi
ronment," he says. “I think that
is irresponsible. We have to
start getting involved We need
a humanitarian government
sympathetic to human needs."
Holden credits such institu
tions as "organized religion”
and public education for condi
tioning the mind. Holden has
experienced teaching within the
public education system and
believes we are "putting the
mind to sleep."
By discouraging creative
thinking we are In effect placing
a rock on future growth, he
says.
"I realize what I am working
against. I'm not a visionary. I am
a realist, not an idealist. People
thought it idealistic to go to the
moon But, you have to start to
turn (your) vision into actuality."
Holden is now contacting in
dividuals at the grassroots level
he feels would be empathic to
his campaign. Many of these
people are in "New Age" and
spiritual groups. In Eugene,
Holden spoke before such
groups as Greenpeace and the
Foundation of Universal Unity.
The traditional media has also
been fairly receptive in Eugene
— he has been on three televi
sion stations and six radio
programs, as well as being
featured In an article in the
Springfield News.
The Theosophical Library of
Springfield sponsored his stay
in the area
Holden says he is able to live
on $200 to $300 a month with
the help of such organizations.
But the rigors of his odyssey are
manifested most clearly on his
body, not his wallet.
Press photos of Holden from
the beginning of the campaign
show a healthy, plump man, but
after six months on the road, he
now has pronounced cheek
bones and an almost emaciated
body.
