Pres. Olum
apologizes
University Pres Paul Olum
offered his apologies in a Nov. 3
memo for forgetting to allow

proposal to postpone their
salary increase after his recent
‘‘State of the University”
address
Olum now proposes discus
sing the matter at the University
Assembly meeting on Dec 8. No
action will be taken concerning
the postponement until Feb 4,
he says
Olum made the proposal to
postpone the faculty salary
increase until March 25 in order
to absorb the three percent
voluntary cut in classified
salaries Classified salaries
were frozen by the state legisla

After discussing the proposal,
Olum told the faculty that "this
is a matter for discussion and
when I finish, you should have
an opportunity to comment and
to disagree and, if you wish, to
make provision for further
action.” However, Olum
adjourned the meeting without
providing time for comment

Balfe cautions SUAB
Student organizations autonomy may be threatened if
the groups are not careful. ASUO Pres C.J. Balfe told the
Student University Affairs Board Monday
A faculty advisory committee, which has no student
representatives, has been meeting secretly for months. Balfe
said The committee meets with University Pres Paul Olum
and has influence over him, he added
"I've seen their advice change his decision," Balfe said
The ASUO is forming a student advisory council to
counterbalance the faculty committee, he said The student
council will consist of student leaders who hopefully will have
the same impact on Olum as the other committee, Balfe said
SUAB must also be wary of professors who want to see
student representation on the Faculty Senate and University
Assembly abolished, he said These professors are a minority
but may swell into a majority if students don't monitor the
situation, added Dan Allen, SUAB chairer
The ASUO also is forming a legislative council to coor
dinate lobbying efforts in Salem. Balfe said SUAB, ASUO and
Student University Relations Council will work together
instead of arguing about which group will head the lobbying
effort, as in the past, he added
In other business. Allen said some members are not
keeping their hours at the Information and Grievance Center
and SUAB office
Board members will help distribute evaluation forms of
University services within two weeks, Allen added The forms
are intended to discover University weaknesses and
strengths as seen by students to help in Chancellor Bud
Davis’ program to keep Oregon high school students in state
universities, he said
SUAB also selected new members to fill board vacancies
The board approved Richard Bodine, education sophomore,
for education. Penny Evans, political science senior, for
political science, and Greg Wimmer, accounting and finance
senior, for business -economics
