Cagers entertain Taiwan
By Debbie Howlett
Of th« Emerald
When Bev Smith graduated
last year, she left the Oregon
women’s basketball team a
legacy She also left a big ques
tion mark.
But, head coach Elwin Heiny
says he has the answer: team
work
"Overall," the seventh year
coach says, “our level of talent
is higher than ever we will
look for everyone to contribute
to a total team effort."
The first test, tonight s 7:30
game against the Republic of
China at McArthur Court, will tell
Heiny whether he has the
correct answer
The team from Taiwan has
been tagged with every
description in the book —
except tall and physical near the
basket For the Duck's, the
contrast in team styles will be a
real test because most of the
Duck's problems in the past
have been at the guard slot.
Taiwan's starting guards, a
matched set of 5-7 24 year-olds
named Hsu Tsui-lin and Hsu
Hsueh-chu, hit for 26 and 22
points, respectively in the first
game of their tour at the Univer
sity of Washington last Tuesday
The characterizations of the
Taiwanese team always in
cludes three words, quick,
aggressive and sharp-shooting
The international rules the
teams will follow tonight are also
condusive to a quick game The
key is wider at the base, which
makes it harder to camp out
under the hoop And on back
court violations, the referee
doesn't have to touch the ball
before it's put into play — the
team can pick it up and go
If the offense is in a lull,
Taiwan's defense will pick up
the slack They play a swarming,
trapping type of defense, says
Duck assistant coach Debbie
Adams
"We re not used to that style
of play,” she says. "Usually the
guard's are quick, but this
whole team is quick.”
A key to tonight's contest for
the Ducks will be Alison Lang, a
6-3 junior from Saskatchewan,
Canada Lang led the Ducks in
scoring, rebounding and field
goal percentage last year
Lang, says Adams, is quick
and agile enough that ’she
shouldn’t have any problems ”
Joining Lang in a newly
installed double-post offense,
will be Helen Higgs, a 6-4 junior
from Anchorage, Alaska. Higgs
is bigger and stronger after a
summer of weight workouts and
a lot of basketball
The Ducks will probably have
one more 6-footer in the lineup
in Mary Ann Stoican. Stoican, a
forward from Gig Harbor,
Washington, is the only senior
on this year’s squad Stoican,
who started 24 games a year
ago, along with Higgs and Lang,
are one of three co-captains for
the Ducks this year.
Another of Heiny's answers,
perhaps the one to the toughest
question, will be put to the test
tonight. He recruited quickness
over height this year by signing
a pair of highly rated guards —
something the Republic of
China team will surely test ton
ight.
They are Heather McDuffie, a
5-8 flash from St Mary’s
Academy in Portland, and Laur
ie Tennant, a 5-10 all-around
athlete from Sam Barlow High
School in Gresham
“They're two very good
guards, two of the better guards
we've had in the program. Both
of them are very quick,’’ Adams
says
Tonight Heiny will find out
how quickly the pair can adjust
to a higher level of competition,
and how well the questions have
been answered
Netters drop five
It was not a good weekend for
Oregon sports The Oregon
women's volleyball team lost all
five of its matches in the UCLA
Invitational Friday and
Saturday
On Friday, the Ducks fell to
15th-ranked University of
California-Santa Barbara 15-4,
15-8 Ronda Dalthorp paced
Oregon with a 667 hitting mark,
and Anetta Ensworth had three
kills.
Next, the Ducks lost to
14th-ranked Texas A & M 15-10,
15-6, with Sue Harbour getting
eight kills
Finally. Oregon capped off
the day by losing to New Mexi
co, a team coach Chris Voelz
had hoped to beat, 15-4,15-5.
Saturday, the Ducks had the
misfortune of facing top-ranked
San Diego State and third
ranked Pacific Both defeated
Oregon easily, SDSU winning
15-7, 15-4 despite six kills by
Harbour, and UOP winning
15-4, 15-4
The five losses left the Ducks
with a record of 11-16 tor the
season, 4-7 in the NorPac
Conference Oregon will finish
out their season at home Nov
12 and 13 with matches against
Idaho and traditional rival Ore
gon State
