Great experience. Pays pretty well.
Good people to work with.
You’ll have to be good to get the job!
Sure. But it’s worth it. I’ll get some
training and then Winter Term I’ll start

First commercial flight
for Columbia, Thursday
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP)
- With a predawn •'call to
stations," test conductor Andy
Brown on Sunday started the
countdown for space shuttle
Columbia's first satellite
carrying commercial flight, set
for a fiery liftoff Thursday
The count began on schedule
at 3 a m. when Brown sum
moned more than 50 techni
cians and engineers to their
consoles in the launch control
center three miles from the steel
and concrete pad where
Columbia is perched
The four astronauts who will
man the shuttle on its first
operational mission were at the
Johnson Space Center in
Houston, concluding months of
training They are Vance Brand,
the commander; pilot Robert
Overmyer and mission specia
lists William Lenoir and Joseph
Allen.
The eaily part of the count
proceeded smoothly as Colum
bia's electrical power was
switched on and the
60-foot-long cargo bay doors
were closed, sealing inside the
two 7,200-pound communica
tions satellites that are the
shuttles first commercial

Satellite Business Systems of
McLean, Va , and Telesat of
Canada are the first in a long
line of customers who will pay to
have their payloads carried into
orbit by the shuttle They each
have paid the National Aeron
autics and Space Administra
tion $10 million for hauling up
the two $30 million satellites.
Vermonters snorting in disgust
over developers pig farm ‘joke’
STOWE, Vt. (AP) - Residents
of this picturesque tourist town
are squealing over a
developer's plan to plunk down
a pig farm on the spot where he
was denied permission to build
a motel.
The future hog farm was
heralded by truckloads of
manure dumped into the
meadow where the 79-unit
motel would have been, all
within sight of the neighbors
who opposed it
The road, Vermont 108, is
lined with inns, eateries and
condominiums.
Jonathan Brownell, a lawyer
hired by townspeople to stay the
sty, called the new plan "a joke”
and said it was retaliation for the

local uproar over the motel
proposal.
Residents last week got a
temporary injunction against all
activity at ihe site, including
manure dumping
They also have appealed the
zoning permit for the pig farm
granted Ramsey Associates of
York, Maine
Ray Ramsey, who owns
another hotel in Vermont and
four in other parts of New
England, has told state and
town officials he will raise up to
200 pigs and some cattle on 16
acres of the Stowe land he
bought for $110,000 in April
He said he would build 50
pens, a barn, a chicken coop
and a mobile home for a hired
hand
The town granted the permit
since agriculture is permitted in
the area under zoning laws
Ramsey lost his effort to build
a motel on the site last month
when his request for a
mandatory state environmental
permit was turned down
Neighbors complained that a
new motel would ruin one of the
last open spaces on the busy
stretch of highway that winds up
a mountainside
