Video games stabilize
discretionary services
By Tony Hazarlan
Of th« Emaratd
The recreation center continues to have financial problems
due to its "discretionary" services, said Bob Schutz, EMU assistant
director and business manager at the EMU Board budget com
mittee meeting Thursday.
Without the money from video games, "the recreation center
would not exist," Schutz said. Whether students decide to bowl or
play pool, he said, the cost of the services still exists.
Mary Hotchkiss, budget committee chairer, asked Schutz if the
video games corresponded with the union’s policy of budgeting
programs with academic merit
"Most (college) unions have it and they make good money from
it,” Schutz said The machines turned a profit of $58,216 in 1980-81,
he said.
Despite the unprofitability of the recreation center and the main
desk, the budget committe continues to find them worthy services,
Schutz said
In other financial matters, Schutz said the University is
contemplating contracting out custodial services, probably to save
money. No decision has been made, but it is uncertain whether the
EMU will have a say in the contract signing, Schutz said
"We’re not convinced there is a savings of money, but it's safe
to assume there is,” he said about the service for the EMU
Should a contract be signed, the-custodians would only do the
contracted work, resulting in a lack of "flexibility," Schutz said
"The physical plant director would be in charge of the contract,
but the EMU would have plenty to say” over its applicability to the
union, he said
"At the moment, we re not in favor of it," Schutz said.
Board member Jeff Nudelman voiced concern about the
increase of print shops in the University vicinity. He proposed
renting the EMU print shop to another type of business But Schutz
said the print shop will break even this year, and the future looks
bright as the shop's machines are paid off.
"In two years, we know we ll be saving $1,000,” in operation
costs, Schultz said
Schutz, EMU business manager for the past eight years, won’t
be around to see if the shop prospers, as he’s been hired as the
business manager of the Hult Center for the Performing Arts
Schutz will begin working at the Hult Center on Dec. 1.
The EMU hopes the position can be filled by the day Schutz
leaves, but "it might take a little longer than that," said EMU director
Adell McMillan The EMU has to wait for a certified list of applicants
from the management service department before a selection
committee can screen the candidates, she said
In other board news, three board positions are open to
applications, said John Dulcich, EMU Board chairer
