Pope implores scientists halt nuclear
arms race, making ‘death’ weapons
MADRID, Spain (AP) - Pope
John Paul II implored scientists
Wednesday to call a halt to the
nuclear arms race by refusing to
fashion new instruments of
death
"It is a scandal of our time that
many researchers are dedicat
ed to improving new weapons
for war," the pope told a
gathering of Spanish professors
and intellectuals at Madrid's
Complutense University
"Consciences must be
awakened," he declared "Your
responsibility and the possibili
ties of influence on public opin
ion are immerse Make them
serve the cause of peace and
the real progress of man "
The 62-year-old pontiff was
only four days into his 10-day
tour of Spain, the first by a pon
tiff, but he acknowledged he
was tiring
"Your fatigue and mine are
interrelated/' he replied, grin
ning, when a reporter asked if
he was tired
The pope skipped several
pages of his address to Spanish
priests Tuesday evening and
went to bed early, aides report
ed. But he was up early as usual
for a crowded schedule that in
cluded meetings with local
representatives of other Chris
tian churches, with 200
members of the Polish com
munity and with a delegation of
12 Sephardic Jews.
In the afternoon, he
celebrated Mass for 50,000
people in a working-class
neighborhood, and in the
evening he led a prayer service
for young people who packed a
130,000-seat soccer stadium
"Hurricane Wojtyla," said the
tabloid Diario 16, using the
pope's Polish surname
At his meeting with the
Spanish Poles, John Paul
recalled that their ancestors
were refugees from two
19th-century rebellions against
Russian occupation He
commented: ‘‘Yours was not a
simple emigration for bread but
an emigration for ideas ”
At the pope's side was
Poland's Roman Catholic
primate, Archbishop Jozef
Glemp, who came from Warsaw
to the Vatican last week to
report on the situation in their
homeland Glemp flew back to
Rome Wednesday and is return
ing to Poland Thursday
The pope's meeting with the
Sephardic Jews was his first
with a Jewish delegation since
he was widely criticized by Jews
for receiving Yasser Arafat of
the PLO on Sept 15 The

Terrorists surrender, free hostages
COLOGNE. West Germany
(AP) — Gunmen who said they
were against military rule in
Turkey seized the Turkish con
sulate and dozens of hostages
in a storm of gunfire, but gave
themselves up after nearly 16
hours of negotiations, police
reported They said all the
hostages were released
The terrorists charged into
the consulate Wednesday mor
ning Police said five people
were injured by flying glass as
consular employees and visitors
scrambled to escape
By midnight Wednesday, the
raiders had released about 59
hostages in stages, but it was
unclear how many still remained
inside the four-story building
when they surrendered,
West German television said
earlier the gunmen demanded
that "a comprehensive political
manifesto" be broadcast over
radio stations, but that police
negotiators had rejected the
demand Officials refused
comment on the negotiations
In phone calls to radio
stations and local newspapers
soon after the takeover, the
attackers claimed to have 80
hostages Police said they were
unable to confirm the number of
people inside the consulate
Cologne Police Chief Juergen
Hosse said 40 men and women
were allowed to leave the build
ing an hour after the seizure,
when a gunman appeared at
one of the few unshuttered win
dows pointing a gun at the head
of a woman and shouting

19 persons in small groups, in
cluding a woman and her

"Devrimci Sol,' or “Revolu
tionary Left," a radical leftist
group with 781 members now
on trial in Turkish martial law
