Nuclear mad
After seeing Dr Helen
Caldocott speak on the threat of
nuclear war, I was touched by
the very real possiblity of
planetary destruction I was also
touched by the equally real
hope that our political system
could hold This Tuesday we
have an opportunity to express
to our country and the world
how the people of Oregon feel
about this nuclear madness
I urge you to vote on Nov 2 A
yes vote on 5 can be a first and
crucial step in halting this lethal
arms race A vote to re-elect Jim
Weaver will support a most
committed anti-nuclear con
gressman Nuclear weapons
poise the greatest threat to sur
vival that the world has ever
known Please vote, your life
may depend on it.

Media Tactics
New students to the
University may not feel familiar
enough with local political is
sues to cast an informed vote on
election day tomorrow You
have made a commitment to
college and living in Eugene, so
consider it a part of your
education to become
knowledgeable about local
political issues and how they
affect you The student popula
tion of the University can have a
considerable impact on this
election in particular
I’m sure you are strongly
opinionated about national
politics Carry your sentiments
over on a local level by register
ing to vote If you ask Oregon
residents, they will tell you that
Jim Weaver, Democrat incum
bent, has worked very hard
for the people of the 4th District
and is a very capable
representative of our best
interests in Congress. A long
time resident of Oregon, Jim
Weaver knows the needs of his
constituency
Don’t let media tactics sway
your vote Look instead to the
proven record and the
grassroots sentiment of the
people of southwestern Ore
gon Register to vote, and sup
port Weaver on election day

Self-service
It is my hope that the people
of Oregon are not deceived by
the campaign for self-service
gasoline stations. This is a big
oil business ploy to turn a multi
million dollar business into a
much larger one This would be
at the expense of the Oregon
economy
The price of gas will not be
cheaper. It's not in California.
The oil companies know that we
will pay a much higher price We
already have There also will no
longer be the high overhead of
employment payroll Thousands
of Oregon employees will lose
their jobs adding greatly to the
unemployment payments made
by the state The money that
would have been paid to Ore
gon employees will now go to
the oil companies, with the
money leaving the state The
state will also lose all the
revenue received from taxing
this income.
Please vote no on Ballot
Measure 4 Stop big oil busi
ness, from devastating the
already crippled Oregon econ
omy

Foresight
Much has been made of the
effect that the Land Conserva
tion and Development Commis
sion has had on Oregon's
economy. The point is that the
agency restricts development,
thereby discouraging industry
from entering the state Actual
ly, many of our present econ
omic woes stem from a lack of
foresight
We seldom can predict the
economy, but it's a sure bet that
booming new-housing industry
will not always boom It takes
long-range planning to develop
new markets and uses for
lumber products It takes fore
sight to see that Oregon can't
survive on one industry Now,
when were near bottom,
everyone is yelling "diversifica
tion’’ and our leaders run
around putting Band Aids on
everything
This is precisely why we need
LCDC Yes, we need to attract
new industry, the way to do it,
however, is not to make Oregon
LIGHTHOUSE
MISSION"
'A MU, lr YOU PLEASE, FARFflDttm MAPPING NOUVEAU BROKE,'
like all the rest. Sure a
"research corridor" is a good
idea, but many states are work
ing on their version of the same
thing. Land is our ace-in-the
hoie The space and beauty that
we have is what sets Oregon
apart. And the only way to
maintain it is through
comprehensive planning (if you
believe otherwise, visit the
beautiful West 11th strip, where
signs urge "Yes on 6").
Let's keep Oregon the
nation's leader in land-use
planning, so that when new
development comes to the state
it is clean and is situated in such
a way that it doesn’t degrade
our other resources Vote for
leaders with foresight who will
work to make LCDC more effi
cient, while still effective, and
vote NO on Ballot Measure 6

Effective
Congratulations on your
endorsement of Congressman
Jim Weaver for re-election
Jim Weaver is likely to go
down in history as one of Ore
gon's most effective
congressmen in the finest tradi
tion of public service set by the
late Sen Wayne Morse
I was witness in Washington
D C in the spring, summer and
fall of 1980 to Weaver's influen
tial and effective battle against
the fraudulent Northwest Power
Act Not only did Congressman
Weaver stage one of the rare
successful filibusters against
the Power Act, but he effectively
improved the legislation while
leading opposition against it
Weaver, in his legislative
marathon against the Power Act
(and in many other instances),
not only gained support of
House leadership in his efforts
to improve the bill, but even his
efforts of opposition in final
passage of the Act drew support
at different times (for Weaver) of
votes of several-hundred-vote
margins House Speaker Tip
O'Neill, Chairman Richard Bol
ling of the House Rules Com
mittee, and many other
congressional leaders helped
Weaver as he staged his
effective campaign to improve
the Power Act while opposing it
I can attest from my own
personal experience in
Washington D C. that Weaver,
in this Power Act fight and
countless other instances,
exercised rare courage and skill
in fighting for the best interests
of his constituents and country
He deserves to be returned to
Congress to continue his
representation in our behalf

Green vote
Fellow earth-lovers, let's unite
behind the Green Vote before
the Northwest becomes like
Everyplace Else. USA The
desecration of our environ
ment and the pollution of our
vulnerable saucer-like airshed
is bad for our health and bad for
business
I believe the best hope for
economic recovery in Oregon
lies in preserving the natural
beauty of our countryside,
mountains, and shorelines while
cultivating tourism; cleaning up
out rivers while recovering the
native salmon; stimulating the
solar conversion and organic
agriculture industries, main
taining our first-rate educational
and cultural institutions, etc
To these ends, I support the
following candidates and ballot
measure Weaver Knlonanski
Anthony, a wealthy Okla
homan with a huge campaign
war chest, has accepted money
from many large timber cor
porations
It is naive to believe that
Anthony could function as a
moderate with such backing He
who pays the piper calls the
tune.
Let's vote green for Oregon
on Nov 2.

those false promises and
became governor, financial
support for higher education in
Oregon has plummeted Ore

Atiyeh's budget slashing of over
$56 million dollars, some of the
