U.S. covet operation
reported in Nicaragua
NEW YORK (AP) — The United States is sponsoring a
Honduras-based covert military operation to harass and
undercut Nicaragua's leftist Sandinista government,
Newsweek magazine reports in this week's editions
"This is the big fiasco of this administration. Newsweek
quoted an unidentified U S government official as saying
"This is our Bay of Pigs."
The Reagan administration has denied Nicaraguan
claims that it is trying to destabilize that nation's government
On Sunday, State Department spokeswoman Anita
Stockman said that since she had not seen the Newsweek
article, she could not comment directly on it And she said it
was the department's "general policy not to comment on
alleged intelligence" reports
According to Newsweek, the covert operation began
under Pres Jimmy Carter and broadened in December when
Pres Ronald Reagan authorized the CIA to contact dissident
Nicaraguans in exile and also to conduct political and
paramilitary operations to stop weapon shipments to
Salvadoran rebels

tightly guarded Pope John Paul
II, the first pontiff ever to visit
Spain, received a tumultuous
welcome from tens of
thousands of cheering faithful
Sunday at the start of a 10-day
tour.
Spaniards thronged the
streets of the sunny capital,
shouting "Viva el Papa!’’
showering him with flowers and
waving Vatican and Spanish
flags as the pontiff waved from
his bullet-proof "popemobile ”
More than 100,000 policemen
and volunteers were mobilized
to guard the pope, who was the
target of two assassination
attempts in the last 17 months,
including one by a renegade
Spanish priest
Stepping off his Italian airliner
earlier at Barajas airport outside
Madrid, the pope kissed the
ground and was greeted by King
Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia
Telling of his joy at the visit to
this overwhelmingly Catholic
nation, John Paul also recalled
"the well-known tensions,
sometimes leading to open
clashes which have taken place
in the bosom of your society. "
One policeman was killed and
five others were wounded
Sunday night in a bomb blast
near the Basque city of Vitoria.

St Ignatius of Loyola where the
pope is scheduled to say Mass
next Saturday, the Spanish
news agency EFE reported
No one claimed responsibility
for the explosion, but militant
Basque separatists have been
waging a bloody campain in
recent years in an effort to gain
autonomy for the Basque region
in northern Spain
EFE quoted police as saying
the bomb had been placed in a
vehicle parked beside a
highway and was detonated
when several police cars drove
by.
