IFC resolves itself to reconsider funding groups
By Rich Burr
Of th« EmaraM
The Incidental Fee Committee
voted Wednesday to approve a
resolution allowing the com
mittee to reduce funding or
zero-fund programs that "have
become so specialized or so
restrictive that they no longer
serve the needs of, or benefit,
the student body." The vote was
4-1 with one abstention
Though the resolution du
plicates decision-making auth
ority the IFC already has,-it is
designed to send ASUO-funded
programs a message," said Jeff
Nudelman, IFC member who
wrote the resolution
"I want to show the programs
that this is our frame of mind,”
Nudelman said
The resolution refers to
programs such as honorary
groups and Tabard Inn/Pot &
Quill, Nudelman said
"I want to stress that elimina
ting funds is not eliminating
programs," he added
The committee was divided
on a resolution requiring all
organizations receiving inc
idental fee funding to submit
goals The Athletic Department.
EMU and ASUO Executive are
not required to submit goals
because their goals are already
well-known and accepted, said
Bart Hill, IFC chairer
Dianne Ritterband-Mason, in
itiator ot the resolution, said the
committee should receive
specified goals from the
excluded programs to
determine if the goals should be
funded
"Maybe I don't want to fund
some of their goals," she said
The resolution failed 3-2-1
with Ritterband-Mason and
Mary Alice Holmes approving.
Hill, Betzy Fry and Mary
Shrauger dissenting and
fvudelman abstaining
Another resolution requiring
all new groups to be recognized
by the ASUO for one year before
receiving funding also was
defeated
The resolution would help
reduce the number of new
programs applying for funds in a
year with little available money
and increasing numbers of
programs, said Holmes, the
resolution's sponsor.
Hill said the ASUO does not
Keep accurate records of
program recognition, and the
resolution would hinder the
committee from granting money
to beneficial new groups
The resolution failed 4-1 with
one abstention
In other business, the com
mittee unanimously approved
transferring half of Oregon
Student Public Interest
Research Group's budget to the
state OSPIRG office A similar
transferral was approved by last
year s committee, said Tanya
Holonko, OSPIRG staff orga
nizer
The committee also approved
transferring money in the
OSPIRG budget to fund a con
sumer hotline the group is
scheduled to start
II er ai.
