Gridders hope
to drop UCLA
By Paul Danzer
Of the Emerald
In looking ahead to
Saturday's trip to the Rose Bowl
to challenge the 11th-ranked
UCLA Bruins, it is tempting for
the Oregon football squad to
look to the past
The freshest memories, of
course, are of the strong
showing in last weekend's 13-13
tie which knocked Notre Dame
out of the top-20 It was a game
the Ducks won everywhere but
on the scoreboard,
But a more pleasant memory
is of the last time Oregon
travelled to Los Angeles to face
UCLA That was back in 1980
and the Ducks engineered a
20-14 win over the Bruins, who
were ranked eighth at the time
It may even bring back
recollections of Jan 1, 1958.
when the Ducks last played in
the Rose Bowl, scaring a heavily
favored Ohio State team, before
succumbing 10-7
But memories don't win
football games No one knows
that better than Oregon coach
Rich Brooks, who must prepare
his 0-6-1 Ducks to tackle the
6-0-1 Bruins at 1 30 p m
Brooks has spent his time this
week thinking about how to
slow down the nation's top
passing attack and fourth best
offense, while trying to shift his
own offense into high gear
"We have to score 21 points
to even be in the game," said
Brooks, who has seen his team
reach that mark only once this
season, in a 37-21 loss at
Washington
Brooks' concern is warranted
because the Bruins are the
second highest scoring team in
the nation, averaging 38 6
points per game UCLA
quarterback Tom Ramsey leads
the nation in passing efficiency
and is fourth in total offense,
averaging 297.7 yards per
game
The Bruins showed their
passing power last week at
California, throwing for 397
yards in a 47-31 win. It was the
sixth 300-plus yard effort
through the air in seven games
this season
“Air Donahue," as Bruin fans
refer to coach Terry Donahue s
1982 team, has had unusual
success with the big play That
fact is reflected by the Bruins'
incredible 15 3 yards per
completion average
Statistics like that scare
Brooks
“We can’t give up the long
play, Brooks said But despite
the success of the Bruin air
attack, Brooks said the key to
stopping the Bruins is to control
the run "We need to control the
running game so that we can
keep them off balance That way
we can do some special things
to stop the passing game”
The best way to stop the Bruin
attack is to keep it off of the
field, so Brooks is hoping that
his offense can continue to
control the ball the way it has
the past two games We have
to take more snaps than the
opponent, said Brooks.
A key to controlling the ball
will be the ability of Terrance
Jones and Ladaria Johnson to
run the ball inside, something
the Ducks have done more
consistently of late Jones led
Oregon on the ground for the
fifth time this season last week

Oregon's Dwight Ford (57) and Steve Brown(28) hope to join their teammates in stuffing the UCLA
Bruins Saturday, the way they did on this play against Notre Dame last weekend
with 62 yards on 14 carries
"It's really a prerequisite ot
this offense," Brooks said of the
ability to run the ball inside "If
we re not (running inside), it
makes it tough to do the other
things we want to do with this
offense "
Brooks said that fullback
Dwight Robertson, who had
been sidelined five weeks with a
bad knee before getting into the
Notre Dame game, will play a lot
this week But he cautioned
against expecting great things
from his senior because of all
his time off
Brooks is still not happy with
the Ducks' passing attack "It
did improve, but we must throw
it better than we did last week "
Last week, sophomore
quarterback Mike Jorgensen
connected on eight of 21 passes
for 96 yards Jorgensen, who
suffered a concussion at Cal
two weeks ago and had to rest
at several points against the
Irish, will start at QB against
UCLA
On defense, middle
linebacker Chris Cosgrove, who
left last week's game after one
play with the recurrence of a
pinched nerve in his neck,
probably will not see action this
weekend
In his place will be freshman
Lerry Wilson, who Brooks laud
ed for an outstanding
performance against Notre
Dame He collected nine tackles
and a pass interception -
“lerry Wilson did an
remarkable job for a freshman in
the Notre Dame game, but I'd
still like to have my veteran out
there,'' Brooks said.
While the Ducks may have to
fight the urge to remember the
past, UCLA must battle the urge
to look ahead. The Bruins play
the second-ranked Washington
Huskies next week in Seattle
“I know the coaches won't
look past us," Brooks said.
"And I’m sure that our tie with
Notre Dame will make it easier
for them to convince their
players.”
Volleyballers hope for sweep
The Oregon volleyball team
will be in uncharted territory
when the Ducks travel to the
apple state for matches against
Washington State tonight, and
Washington Saturday
Oregon hasn't beaten
Washington while Chris Voel?
has coached Oregon, and
is looking to break that streak
We've never beaten
Washington in the five years I've
been here, ” said Voelz. "This
would be the time to do it."
The Ducks, 9-10 on the
season and 2-6 in the NorPac
Conference, will be bolstered by
the return of outside hitter
Murphy still swinging
ATLANTA (AP) - Dale
Murphy, named to The Assoc
iated Press major.league All
Star baseball team Thursday
and considered a front-runner
for the National League Most
Valuable Player Award, wasn't
satisfied with his season and
neither was Atlanta Braves
Manager Joe Torre
So late last week Murphy went
to Sarasota, Fla., home of the
Braves' instructional league
team, to work on his hitting with
Torre for four days
“It was my idea," Torre said
"I just felt he needed some work
on hitting, especially hitting the
breaking ball
“I didn’t order him to go I just
asked him if he would. I just
wanted to talk hitting with him
and give him something to think
about until the spring," said
Torre, who was named the AP’s
Manager of the Year for guiding
the Braves to the West Division
title
“I thought it was a com
pliment that he wanted to take
the time and go down there and
work on a few things with me,”
the 26-year-old Murphy said
Wednesday "Joe was a
successful hitter, and I think
there’s always opportunity to
learn. I think it was nice of him to
give me some concentrated
study time "
Murphy, a graduate of Wilson
High School in Portland, batted
281 last season and drove in
109 runs, tying him for the
league lead with Al Oliver of the
Montreal Expos. He also hit 36
home runs, one behind leader
Dave Kingman of the New York
Mets, had a .507 slugging
percentage and stole 23 bases
But, the 6-foot-5, 215-pound
Braves outfielder said, “I don't
see any phase of the game I
can't work on. It all needs work.
You always want to improve.”
Ronda Dalthorp, back from a
sprained ankle. Barb Lutz is still
out with the same ailment.
Last time the Ducks met
Washington, it was the Huskies
who came away with a win,
sweeping to a 15-9, 15-13, 15-7
victory at McArthur Court.
Washington is led by its huge
front line of Lynn Poelstra (6-1),
Becky Stone (6-1) and Abby
Lyons (6-1), who combined for
25 kills
“I think that if there is going to
be a major difference — we ll be
blocking them this time,” said
Voelz.
“We've put a lot of respon
sibility on our middle blockers.
We feel much, much better
about our defense.”
Washington State is a rebuild
ing team with seven new faces
on its roster. The Cougars are
coached by Jim Coleman, who
coached the men's United
States national volleyball team
in 1979-80 and the men's Olym
pic team in 1968
Voelz plans to manhandle the
Cougars.
"We want to beat them in
three,” said Voelz.
In addition to sweeping the
Cougars, Voelz would like a
weekend sweep. ‘‘There is
nothing I would like better than
to got up there and win two,
because we've never done it
before," said Voelz.

The men's and women's
cross country teams will both be
running in Washington
Saturday — the men in Pullman
and the women in Seattle.
Coach Bill Dellinger's men
will be trying for their seventh
consecutive Northern Division
crown on the 10,000-meter
course at Washington State.
The Ducks have run against
all of the competition in this
meet this season except for
Washington State. This fact has
Dellinger a little tentative.
"If Washington State has all
its Kenyans, they’ll be strong,"
Dellinger said of the Cougars
Oregon will field 10 runners,
including Jim Hill, the individual
winner in the Ducks’ first two
meets.
After a two-week break from
competition, the women will run
the 5,000-meter layout in the
Washington Invitational at North
Sea-Tac Park.
The race is in preparation for
the NCAA District 8 Champion
ship in Fresno, Cal , Nov. 13 and
the NCAA Championships in
Bloomington, Ind., Nov. 22.
"This course will be more like
the course we ll run at nationals
with a lot of twists, turns and
hilly terrain,” coach Tom Hein
onen said
Although the Ducks should
not receive a serious challenge
as a team, Washington’s Regina
Joyce should challenge Ore
gon’s Kathy Hayes, Eryn Forbes
and Rosa Gutierrez for the in
dividual title.
However, Heinonen is not
taking the race lightly. This is
Washington’s home ground.
They'll be ready.
