Outdoors with Cooz
It's been said that a day with
out reading the Cooz’s column
is like Saturday night without
watching Portland Wrestling I
realize how difficult the last two
weeks must have been an
ticipating today's story
The wait is over. You can
again sleep at night.
As a special treat, I've decid
ed to surprise everyone by
devoting today's column to a
hobby so very dear to me Dur
ing this time of year, it's only
appropriate that we reflect on
the outdoor activity which in
volves the stalking of wild prey
— also known also as hunting
Oh sure, you're probably ex
pecting the Cooz to recap some
of his personal death-defying
hunting excursions responsible
for the hair that now grows in his
nostrils The editors of this tab
loid, however, urged me to
produce a column longer than
two paragraphs
You might be expecting a
lecture on hunter's safety, but
remember, my purpose is to
broaden your intellectual hor
izons, not review your requir
ements for hunting in this state
before the age of 16
In an attempt to educate,
therefore, let's absorb a quick
lesson in history. We will glance
at some of the major events in
the developement of Northwest
hunting
Keep in mind that this histor
ical display of facts and events
is the 'suit of hours of exten
sive r search Only the dates
have been changed to protect
the University's history depart
merit
700.000 B.C. — First pregnant
animal sets foot on Northwest
soil. Result: establishment of
the position of staff biologist for
the Oregon Fish and Wildlife
Department
300.000 B.C. — Oregon Fish
and Wildlife Department issues
first hunting tag in an effort to
control animal population in the
state Result: Open season on
the Tyrannosaurus Rex
"If you kids only knew how
difficult hunting was before
they came out with these
babies."
20,000 B.C. — Discovery of
fire enables hunters to stalk
beasts at night Result: Fish and
Wildlife Department issues first
poaching citations
600 B.C. — Invention of Cin
namon Toast
400 A.D. — Oregon Indian
tribe discovers secret to suc
cessful hunting after mounting
Bushnell scopes to their hunting
bows
1794 — First shipment of flint
lock rifles arrives in Goshen
The response so great that
Pete's One-Stop Flint Lock Ri
fle Store" remains open today
1856 — Henry Weinhard
begins work
I859 — First Californian fined
for illegal hunting on the
Oregon side of the state line
Tne event occurred |ust one day
after Oregon gained statehood
1927 — Grandma Cooz bags
her first Roosevelt elk
1972 — The Cooz downs his
first Wild Ranier
1982 — The Cooz's outdoor
column becomes reality
Remember that these tacts
are not only intellectually
stimulating, they also make an
attractive display behind any
refrigerator magnet
Most of all, the research is the
Cooz's way of saying he cares
about you Remember, an
educated hunter, is a happy
hunter'
