Forgers issue bogus Times

NEW YORK (AP) - At least
6,000 copies of a bogus pub
lication that was printed to look
like a section of The New York
Times were confiscated after
some dealers said they had
been asked to put them into
Sunday papers, the Times said
Leonard Harris, director of
corporate relations, said it was
not known who took the "un
authorized pamphlet" to Man
hattan newsstands Saturday
night Some copies were dis
tributed to readers, said Elliot
Sanger, manager of corporate
relations for the newspaper
The 12-page section, which
closely imitated the news
paper's format, attacked poli
tically influential lawyer Roy
Cohn, Mayor Edward Koch and
Republican gubernatorial can
didate Lewis Lehrman
"This is the poison Tylenol
technique applied to news
papers,” Harris said, referring
to tampering with bottles of Ex
tra-Strength Tylenol that result
ed in the cyanide deaths of
seven people in the Chicago
area
"If we could find out who did
this, we could try to prosecute,"
Sanger said "It's an attempt to
create a section that looks like
The New York Times, and The
New York Times is copyright

He said the case was dis

The phony interview, which
seemed to copy Walters' style of

Parks department clears bank
to create access to Willamette

along the northernmost edge of Skinner's Butte
Park may notice something previously camou
flaged: the Willamette River
Until recently, brush totally covered a
200-foot stretch of river bank just past the Rose
Garden, making it a hangout for vagrants, says
Chuck Solan of the Eugene Outdoor Program
Two rapes and one murder occurred in the
brush over the past few years, Solan says
But workers recently finished clearing, grad
ing and grassing over the bank, making it easier to
launch floatcraft The project was developed by
the Eugene Parks and Recreation Department
While the ideal season for canoeing and
rafting is nearly over, neighbors say that river
goers now take advantage of the clearing, the
only access point on the south and west sides of
the river.
Beside creating a canoe-beaching area, the
project also will tackle the overgrowth on the
bank, says Louis Kroeck, a landscape architect
with Parks and Recreation who originally de
signed the landing area three years ago
"It's getting so overgrown that you can ride
the bikepath and hardly know the river's there,"
he says
Future additions to the site may include
picnic tables and tree planting if there are suf
ficient funds in future budgets, Kroeck says
I ne project s tunaing was aeiayeu uy me
transition in presidential administrations, Solan
says The Federal Heritage Conservation and
Recreation Service grant is competed for by
submitting a presentation to a state parks depart
ment board which distributes the funds
Kroeck presented the landing area plan,
requesting a $95,000 grant, to the state parks
department board The grant requires the city to
contribute a matching sum
In addition to the graded bank, grant funds
will be used to construct restrooms and an open
air shelter on the adjacent parkland, Kroeck says
Future park plans for Eugene highlight a trail
system east and west of Spencer's Butte where
the city has been purchasing land
