Notre Dame will not be the
only nationally-ranked team in
Eugene this weekend
The Oregon women's vol
leyball team will take on
18th-ranked California on
Friday night and 12th-ranked
San Jose State Saturday night,
and coach Chris Voelz is op
timistic about her team's
chances
"I see no reason why we
can't give Cal and San Jose a
good show, play them tough
and maybe even pull off an
upset," Voelz said "San Jose
State and Cal are both beat
able teams,” she added
This will be the first trip to
Oregon for Cal and San Jose
State Both matches will begin
at 7:30 p m at Mac Court
Oregon is coming off a split
last weekend in the Bay Area
With only seven players, the
Ducks rebounded from a loss
to Santa Clara to defeat San
Francisco and up their record
to 2-4 in the NorPac confer

Coach Chris Voelz will try to rally her forces this weekend when the Ducks host California and San
Jose State in NorPac volleyball competition at Mac Court
Stanford California was
second in the BYU Invitational,
while Oregon finished eighth
San Jose State, meanwhile,
has made a complete turna
round from its 14-16 record of
1981 The Spartans are 12-5
this year, owning wins over
ninth-ranked Texas, Cal,
15th-ranked Nebraska and
Washington (twice).
However, Voelz has certain
ly not shown an attitude of
backing down to the big guns
from the Bay area "I never
think we can't beat anybody,”
she emphasized “I always go
into a match thinking we can
win."
Voelz was pleased with the
Ducks' practices this week.
"As a team, we've showYi
improvement Our transitions
have been quicker, and we've
been playing through points
better '" In addition, Voelz
feels her young team has
made steady progress
throughout the season "The
kids have shown good pro
gress,” she said, "and just
because we've had a few set
backs, they shouldn’t let it af
feet them "
Oregon has another plus
with the return of Shaunna
Koenig, who has missed 11
matches with a hand injury.
Koenig practiced for the first
time Thursday; and Voelz is
unsure if she will start or not
Ronda Dalthorp and Barb
Lutz, both suffering from
sprained ankles, will miss this
weekend's matches, although
Voelz is hoping both can re
turn for next week's matches
against Washington State and
Washington
Timbers’
sale fails
PORTLAND (AP) — Portland
businessman James Horne
withdrew his offer to purchase
the Portland Timbers Thursday
in a move that could signal the
demise of the financially-trou
bled North American Soccer
League franchise
The team's owner, Louisiana
Pacific Corp., said it would
proceed with dissolving the
franchise effective Nov 1 The
remaining franchises in the
league will get a chance to ob
tain Timbers' players in a dis
persal draft next week
Louisiana-Pacific Chairman
and President Harry Merlo said
Horne had agreed to purchase
the Timbers for $1 million on
Aug 30. Later, Horne asked for
an extension while he reorgan
ized his assets to meet North
American Soccer League
requirements
Those requirements included
a $500,000 performance bond,
a $150,000 letter of credit and a
net worth statement
The extension was granted,
but on Oct. 8 the NASL asked
Horne to produce proof of his
liquid assets, which reportedly
were $2 million That, Horne
said, was the turning point
“Time ran out on us as far as
various things being requested
by the league," Horne said "I
was not able to meet the requir
ements by the league as they
defined them on Oct 8 in time to
meet player requirements that
had to be done "
