Oregon gives away game
Interceptions
throw Ducks
By Mike Riplinger
Of t»w Emerald
An old enemy for the Ducks,
the turnover struck again Sa
turday as Oregon gave away a
10-7 loss to California
Turnovers, and a 26-yard
touchdown pass to former Port
land high school star, David
Lewis, combined to extend the
Duck's recurring nightmare — a
six game losing streak
"Anytime you lose a close one
it hurts, but this one was
especially bad considering how
much we needed a win,” said
Oregon coach Rich Brooks "It
was a tough one to let get
away ”
The Duck offense came alive
though, in a brief flurry at the
end of the game and breathed
hope for an Oregon victory —
something they haven't exper
ienced for a long time
But two high points for the
Ducks during their otherwise
dismal season — the defense
and the punt coverage team —
couldn’t contain Cal The Bears
returned a punt 40 yards to set
up a field goal, then after Dana
Hill led the Ducks on a 16-play,
80-yard touchdown drive, Cal
came back with their own drive,
travelling 72 yards in little more
than a minute for the winning
touchdown
"Sometimes when you do
something well all year long,
you sort of lull yourself to sleep
It was a case where we got
caught with our hands in our
pockets on both the last defen
sive series and punt return,"
said Brooks
Oregon controlled the ball
throughout the game though,
keeping possession almost
two-thirds of the time —
38;09-21:51. The Ducks also ran
for 217 yards against a stingy
Bear defense, while holding Cal
to only 27 yards
But the Ducks accounted for
six turnovers, compared to Cal's
one Oregon was able to throw
for only 17 yards, as Duck quar
terbacked connected on only
4-14 passes, while giving up five
interceptions Throwing more
interceptions than completions
is not the way to win football

"Turnovers have been killing
us all year,” said Brooks
"Everytime we get in a good
stituation we stop ourselves
cold It gets extremely frustrat
ing You don't beat anybody by
doing that."
The Bears started up the ac
tion in the fourth quarter, turn
ing an otherwise boring game
into an exciting one when Ma
riet Ford returned a Kevin Hicks
punt 40 yards to the Ducks
18-yard line It was the first "re
turn of any significance this
season except for the Arizona
State game," said Brooks
The Oregon defense held Cal,
as they did just about all after
noon, and forced the Bears' Joe
Cooper to try his third field goal
This one was good, as the Bears
took a 3-0 lead with 9:34 left in
the game
The Oregon offense came
back roaring, something it has
done only in the Washington
game earlier this season
Hill, the magical man who
seems to ignite the Duck of
fense, returned from his two
week hiatus of suspension and
layoff, to get the Ducks rolling
Coming in for an injured Mike
Jorgensen, lost for the game
with a concussion in the first
half, and an ineffective Edmund
Riveria, who had four intercep
tions on the day, Hill drove the
Ducks 80 yards for a touch
down He crossed the goal line
himself with a 13-yard scamper
Brooks, going for the win all
the way, twice gambled on
fourth downs enroute to the
score Once on the Ducks’ 43,
Hill scurried for five yards and a
first down And on Cal’s 32,
Ladaria Johnson bulldogged for
two yards and another first to
keep the drive going
The Bears didn't quit though,
and for the first time all after
noon, the Oregon defense
wasn't able to stop them.
The drive didn't start that way,
though Mike Walter broke
through the leaky Cal line for a
10 yard sack on the Bears first
play
But the Gale Gilbert to Lewis
show took over The duo com
bined for three straight connec
tions and moved the Bears into
Oregon territory at the 49 The
last catch had a 15-yard per
sonal foul tagged on to it to
move the ball to the 34
Gilbert went back to Lewis,
who hauled in 6 catches for 80
yards for the game, with a 26
yard strike for the go ahead
touchdown
Oregon came back with Ed
mund Rivera, who Brooks called
his best "pure passer." Rivera
completed a 10-yard shot to
Osborn Thomas, then came
back to Thomas again on the
next play. Thomas couldn't
hang onto the ball, as it
bounced out of his arms and
was snagged by Cal defensive
back John Sullivan, ending the
Ducks hopes
