Ducks, Bears hungry for first Pac-10 win
By Paul Danzer
Of the Emerald
Two teams starving for a
Pac-10 football win will go at it
Saturday in Berkeley when
Oregon faces the hungry Bears
of California
Both teams enter the game in
search of their first conference
victory. And both teams can
thank top-ranked Washington
along with Arizona State for
their hunger The Ducks also
have a loss to USC on their
ledger
The 0-5 Ducks had the week
off last week, and the 3-2 Gol
den Bears had an off week, los
ing to the Huskies 50-7 in Seat
tle Prior to last week's disaster,
California upset San Jose State
26-7 at home San Jose State
defeated Oregon 18-13 at Aut
zen Stadium earlier this year

Despite last week's disaster.
Cal has had new life breathed
into its program in the person of
head coach Joe Kapp
"Food, fun, and football — the
three F's, what more do you
need in life " Kapp said
"The teams we've beaten, I
feel good about,” Kapp said
"We did get San Hose State,
which was a tough one, so it's
always nice to have a win like
that in your pocket."
In addition to beating the
Spartans, Cal owns wins over
Colorado (31-17) and San Diego
State (28-0)
Against Washington, Oregon
played its toughest game of the
season before succumbing
37-21 three weeks ago In that
game, sophomore quarterback
Mike Jorgensen started and
moved the Ducks to their first
offensive touchdown in the first
Joe Kapp
quarter, before leaving the
game with a sprained ankle
Jorgensen will reassume the
controls of the Duck attack this
weekend

The Ducks used the off week
to mend the wounded and con
centrate on fundamentals
"It's always good I think to
spend time working on basics,”
said Erik Widmark, Oregon's
offensive coordinator. "We've
had two good weeks,” he said
of the break
In addition to smoothing out
the option attack, the bye al
lowed some of the bumps and
bruises to heal In addition to
Jorgensen, deep snaper Randy
O’Rourke is slated to return
after three weeks on the injured
list with a banged up knee
Running behind Jorgensen in
the option will be fullback Ter
rance Jones and tailback
Ladaria Johnson They will
carry most of the load with oc
casional relief coming from
freshman Eugene King and so
phomore Todd Bland The

Ducks have lost the services of
freshman Alan Jackson for the
season to knee surgery Tail
back Dwight Robertson is still
out with a torn ligament
On the defensive side of the
ball a lot of minor ailments have
disappeared Linebackers Chris
Cosgrove and Dwight Ford are
ready to go after seeing limited
action at USC two weeks ago
Cal owns a 29-17-2 lead in the
series, and a seven game win
ning streak against the Ducks at
Berkeley The two teams last
met in 1980 with Cal winning
31-6,
The key to success against
the Bears will be controlling
their strength, according to
Widmark "They are extremely
strong,” he said.
Even though playing a Joe
Kapp team will be a new exper
ience for the Ducks, Widmark
doesn’t forsee any special
problems
"There are not a lot of secrets
to this game,” he said "There
are only so many things you can
do with 11 players. It basically
comes down to who wants it
more ”
Both teams shouldn't be
lacking there
Warriors,
Portland
play tonight
Lester Conner’s return to the
Willamette Valley will have to
wait
Connor the 6-4 guard who
paced Oregon State to the
Pacific-10 basketball crown last
season, was scheduled to make
an appearance tonight with the
Golden State Warriors when
they play Portland in a National
Basketball Association pre-sea
son game at 7:30 p m in
McArthur Court
But Conner, a first-round draft
pick of the Warriors, remains
unsigned and has not reported
to Golden State s training camp
Portland, however, will have
its number one pick on hand
Lafayette "Fat" Lever out of
Arizona State signed with the
Blazers last weekend The
Blazers could have drafted
Connor, but passed up the OSU
star in favor of Lever
Lever saw his first action as a
Blazer Tuesday night as the
Seattle Super Sonics handed
Portland its first pre-season
loss Lever saw 20 minutes of
action and scored four points
Both the Blazers and the
Warriors finished out of the
playoffs in the NBA s Pacific
Division last season after bat
tling down the stretch
Lever is an important part of
the Blazers plan He will be
fighting with Darnell Valentine
for playing time at the point
guard position
The Blazers, who open the
regular season in Kansas City
on Oct 29, cut guard Eric Smith
from Georgetown after signing
Lever The Blazers must trim
their roster by two more players
before the regular season tips
off
Ticket prices for the game are
$5, $6 and $8 They are availa
ble at Mac Court
