Support the freeze;
sustain the effort
The nuclear arms race has been the folly of both the
governments of the United States and the Soviet Union.
Nuclear weaponry became the toys of military men and
industrialists who live off the race
The little boys who want them are not too bright; the toys
are lethal
The people of the University should join in the proposal
for the United States to propose to the Soviet Union a
bilateral nuclear freeze Ballot Measure 5 states “that both
countries agree to immediately halt the testing, production,
and further deployment of all nuclear weapons, missiles, and
delivery systems in a way that can be checked and verified by
both sides.”
The proponents of the measure realize this piece of
legislation will not end the threat of nuclear war or even halt
nuclear arms buildup
Ballot Measure 3 would do these things; voice the
opinion that Oregonians realize the futility of the present
arms race. Oregonians favor the immediate bilateral freeze
of nuclear weapons, and Oregonians support the ability of
both the Soviet Union and the United States to verify the
freeze on nuclear weaponry construction in each country
The nuclear freeze is the beginning of a national wave of
protest against the futility of nuclear arms production it is
also the mandate necessary to get the Congress to cut the
defense budget The toy box is overflowing
Many members of the University faculty and student
body already have expressed their support of the ballot
measure They realize the weapons have become more of a
threat than the ideas that would compel a country to use
them
Twenty-five percent of the United States citizenry will
vote on a nuclear freeze bill this year This represents the
largest outpouring of local interest on a international issue
ever
Current arms reduction plans, such as Reagan's
START, allow the arms race to continue ST ART provides the
leeway and time for 17,000 new nuclear weapons to be
constructed in this decade. In the words of a joint testimony
by conservatives such as former CIA Director William Colby
and Sen William Fulbright, “It is difficult to see how it is
possible to reduce nuclear weapons while both sides build
new ones at a record rate ”
It is difficult Ballot Measure 3 is the first step on what
must be a "sustained" effort, in the words of Navy Admiral
John Marshall Lee, to halt the fear of nuclear escalation The
next step is arms reduction The arms race has been a futile
game for too long

Puritanical
This letter concerns Terri
Steinberg’s attack on the Dos
Equis X’s and O's advertise
ment Her main complaint is
that the ad is sexist in nature
While I agree that the ad may be
in poor taste, it is wrong to label
the ad "sexist.”
The ad may be considered
sexy, lurid, or even obscene, but
it simply is not "sexist.” The
women in the pictures were not
portrayed as subordinate to
men The fact that they were
clearly intended to be the ob
jects of male lust does not make
the poster sexist Indeed, the
only individuals likely to be ex
ploited by the advertisements
are the poor suckers who end
up paying a high price for an
average beer
The ad may be obscene, or
simply poorly done, but it is not
sexist There's nothing worse
than puritanical feminism

Gentleman
It really is refreshing to know
there are still gentlemen on the
University campus I would like
to take this opportunity to thank
the young oriental student who
went out of his way to share his
umbrella with me during a brief
but violent rain shower. I had
gone on a short errand across
campus and was caught without
an umbrella
I just happen to be a person
who appreciates a gentleman
and would like to say thank you
again

Our own kids
In recent articles discussing
the uses of the Hult Center for
the Performing Arts, it was
mentioned that bringing in "big
outside" names such as Red
Skelton and Pat Boone might
keep "our own" from the op
portunity to perform there
As a matter of fact, Oct 19 is
billed as "Pat Boone/The Jazz
Minors ” The Jazz Minors are a
local group of traditional jazz
musicians, four of whom at
tended Thurston High School
Some of them even attended the
University Some of their early
gigs were benefits in the EMU
Fishbowl and a benefit with Bob
Hope in Mac Court for the
Athletic Fund They went away
to tour and play full time at Dis
neyland but they are still
students' age and most of their
families live right here in this
community This mother of the
clarinet player works right here
on campus
The Jazz Minors will perform
during the first half of the even
ing and I suspect many local
folks will be pretty tickled at
"our own” kids performing
there on that fantastic stage
right here in River City, probably
playing ‘ When the Saints Go
Marchin' In!”

No supply-side
Those who have considered
voting for Ross Anthony in
November, should perhaps
think again. As a Republican
favoring supply-side econ
omics, Anthony’s policies
represent the same set of econ
omic contradictions that have
helped the Reagan Administra
tion plunge the United States
into its worst recession in over
forty years These contradic
tions (illustrated nicely in his
campaign leaflet) have led me to
pose a few questions regarding
Anthony's campaign promises
How can Anthony hope to
provide all possible assis
tance” to private industry (pre
sumably through relaxation of
pollution and land use controls)
“without sacrificing Oregons
excellent quality of life?"
How can he hope to "balance
the Federal budget" while sup
porting corporate tax cuts that
will be costing the Treasury $56
billion a year by 1986? If it
means furthering the effort to
"trim Federal programs,” how
can Anthony possibly hope to
"maintain our obligation to the
elderly, the handicapped and
the truly needy ”
In my mind, the answer to all
three of these questions Is that
he can't Ross Anthony can’t
any better than Ronald Reagan
can and his record speaks for
itself.

Congress can
Mr Streisinger's letter in the
Oct. 5 Emerald contains several
mistatements of fact, which I
would like to respond to:
First, Streisinger erroneously
claims that Helm's legislation,
which would have limited the
jurisdiction of the Supreme
Court, is unconstitutional He
should be interested to know
that Article 3, Section 2 of the
U S Constitution states that
"the supreme court shall have
appelate jurisdiction with
such exceptions and under
such regulations as the Con
gress shall make " Streisinger
may disapprove of the legisla
tion, but it is perfectly constitu
tional
Secondly, Streisinger crit
icizes Helm's abortion legisla
tion, which would have de
clared, as a legislative finding,
that human life begins at con
ception Again, the Congress is
fully within its power Historical
ly, the enforcement clause of
the 14th Amendment has given
Congress the power to deter
mine whether blacks are legally
recognized as persons (until
personhood was granted by a
Constitutional amendment in
1868), there is no reason why
Congress today can't Issue a
legislative finding of "person
hood'' with respect to the un
born
