JWo children remain u
as man trades wea^h?,a9e
weaPon for food
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - An erratic" man
holding two children hostage and claiming that a
woman was dead in an Amtrak sleeper car where
he is holed up, surrendered his pistol Sunday in a
"show of faith ” He said he would surrender if his
godfather spoke to him, police said
The gunman, who identified himself as Mario
Rodriguez, accepted food for the first time in the
three-day standoff He also told police that he had
shot another man
The man lowered a bundle containing a 9mm
pistol from the window of the car Sunday night,
said Police Chief Frederick Heineman He added
that the man was believed to still have a
45-caliber submachine gun in the compartment.
"This is a show of faith," Capt C L Price
said, adding that the pistol was exchanged for
cigarettes, matches and soft drinks
Meanwhile, police continued looking for a
New York City lawyer the gunman identified as his
godfather, Price said Police believe the man also
is the gunman's uncle
Heineman did not release the name of the
godfather.
Earlier in the day, the thin, bare-chested,
bare-legged gunman yelled, leaned out of a
window police had broken earlier and waved
After his 10-second appearance, during which no
gun was in sight, he left a white sheet hanging
outside the window
“Don't shoot, don't shoot, I want water," the
man said in Spanish
Rodriquez told police earlier that the
woman's body was in an upper berth of the
sleeper car Police said there was a strong stench
coming from the car and many of the heavily
armed officers donned surgical masks
Earlier, the man claimed that a male hostage
he said was his brother-in-law also was dead
“Our strategy is to hope to continue to con
vince him to turn those children over to us, if only
for medical reasons," Heineman said "We don't
know if he’ll go for that We do know that he is very
close to the children."
Tucker said the crisis could last much longer
now that the gunman has food
"We’re still basically in the same position we
were before,” he said "We re not rushing the
situation. If he wants something to drink and to eat
then we'll let him do that as long as the children
appear healthy."

An Equal Opportunity Employer
faces 25 years to life in prison.
His co-defendant, Robyn Ar
nold, was acquitted by the six
woman, six-man jury, which had
deliberated for more than three
days.
Arnold, a Mount Vernon
nurse, had paid for the 1980
sex-change surgery that trans
formed her boyfriend, John
Delia, into the transsexual
Diane, according to testimony
Ferrara had been Delia’s lover
before and after the sex change,
according to trial testimony He
had married the victim about
two months before she was
killed
Prosecutors said the defen
dants fired two bullets each into
the victim's head around last
Oct 7 in a wooded area of
Rockland County Her body was
dumped into the Hudson River
and surfaced near Manhattan
on Oct 28
The motive, prosecutors
charged, was “overwhelming
jealousy" over the fact that the
victim was forming new rela
tionships and severing her ties
to the defendants.
The killing allegedly occurred
several days after the model had
moved her belongings out of the
Yonkers apartment she had
shared with Ferrara, according
to testimony
Swedes say mystery sub
may have eluded traps
BERGA NAVAL BASE,
Sweden (AP) — Sweden's naval
command Sunday admitted for
the first time that a suspected
Soviet-bloc submarine said to
be trapped in Hors Bay may
have escaped as early as Oct 1,
the day it was discovered
"There has been a submarine
in Hors Bay,” a statement by
Supreme Cmdr Lennart Ljung
said "It could still be there but
the likelihood is gradually

decreasing "
Ljung conceded the intruder
sub may have escaped Oct 1 or
between Oct 5-7 The navy
previously confirmed the vessel
made one unsuccessful attempt
to break out through mined
barriers during the past week,
but newspapers reported two
more attempts
Navy spokesman Capt Sven
Carlsson told a news confer
ence Sunday that "As far as we
know the submarine is likely still
there the last firm indication
was Friday "
But Ljung's statement, while
acknowledging that "There has
been and may still be a submar
ine in the outer area," added
that "It may be the same sub
marine or It may be a second
one "
