    Ducks zip to victory
in Willamette meet
By Marcus Prater
Of the Emerald
A team crown, an individual
title, a new course record and
four "vital’' breakthroughs.
Those seven items basically
sum up what the Oregon
women's cross country team
accomplished in Saturday's
Willamette Invitational at
Salem's Bush Park
First off, all five Duck runners
finished in the top 15 This ena
bled Oregon to easily take the
team title — 38 points better
than runner-up Oregon State
Oregon’s All-American Kathy
Hayes, running in her first meet
this season, took the individual
titfe with a course record time of
16:31 1 Hayes has been out
because of a strained Achilles
tendon
Cross country coach Tom
Heinonen said his team accom
plished four breakthroughs that
will be beneficial in the waning
meets of the season
"The addition of Hayes and
(Lisa) Martin, Kim Roth's best
race of the season, plus the
finish of (Lori) Alzner are the key
points from Saturday," he said
Roth, a freshman, toured the
5,000 meter course in 17:04.1.
which was good enough for a
third-place finish Oregon Track
Club s Marty Cooksey was
second with a 16:56 8 time
"Kim ran her best race of the
season That does a lot for her
mentally," Heinonen said of the
Salem product "Each race is a
stepping stone for everybody,
and when she (Roth) runs a race
that well it is good for her con
fidence "
Martin, running in her second
meet of the season, finished
fourth. On the way she regained
her competitive edge that she
had been missing, according to
Heinonen
"Getting her and Hayes back
was very important It is vital to
have those two in our top seven
She (Martin) hung right with
Roth Lisa was right there and it
was a real boost for her con
fidence,” Heinonen said
Heinonen said the other
breakthrough was Lori Alzner's
ninth place finish
"Lori Alzner ran over a minute
faster than last year's Wil
lamette She is putting it
together for the first time since
she was a freshman, and she
could be a big factor for us," he
said
Hayes' successful return was
the biggest factor for the Ducks
She complained of a sore ankle
after the race, but that is to be
expected, according to Heinon

OSU doesn’t lose!
PULLMAN. Wash. (AP) - The
pressure is on the Ducks as
Oregon State became the first
Oregon university not to lose a
football game
The Beavers tied Washington
State 14-14, upping their record
0-4-1
"We feel like winners," said
OSU Coach Joe Avezzano,
whose club is 0-2-1 in Pac-10
play "We were picked to lose by
a bunch The young men got
after each other It was a good
game.”
"Whatever the difference is
between winning and losing,
we re doing the things that
lose," said Washington State
coach Jim Walden
WSU hasn t won a game since
its 34-14 season opener against
Idaho, a bitter disappointment
after last year's 8-3-1 mark The
Cougars are currently 1-3-1
overall, 0-0-1 in conference
play
Oregon State place-kicker
Chris Mangold iced the tie and
ended the Beavers' 14-game
losing streak when he booted a
36-yard field goal with 31
seconds to play
Mangold's tying kick came
only 42 seconds after he missed
a 57-yarder But Washington
State had 12 men on the field
during the attempt, giving the
Beavers 15 yards and a first
down
"The last play on third down,
we had in our robber' defense
where we use three corner
backs,” Walden said "When we
went to the field goal situation,

for us,' said Avezzano “We re
playing a lot of young people
We've got to feel good, coming
back like that If you don't lose,
that’s the first step toward win
