Junior pedals toward top
By Mike Riplinger
Of th« Emerald
Going out for a simple bike
ride seven years ago turned into
the ride of a lifetime for Glenn
Sanders
Sanders, a 13-year-old at the
time, was out riding around the
streets of Portland when he was
recruited by Chuck Richards, a
former national pentathalon
track team member who was
forming a cycling club
He just saw me out riding and
decided I would be good for the
club," said Sanders. "He and a
few others on the team would
just ride around and whenever
they saw a likely candidate, they
would stop him and try and talk
him into joining."
Sanders, a junior who rides
for the Oregon cycling team will
finish out the long season Sun
day at the Epilogue, a race near
the freeway turnoff to Harris
burg, Junction City
The Epilogue is the last race
of the season, a season which
saw Sanders rise close to the
peripheral of breaking into
national prominence in the cy
cling world
After finishing second in an
Olympic development race in
Nevada City, Calif , which gave
points toward making the na
tional team, Sanders feels he is
ready to try the bigtime He
plans on moving this winter to
Colorado, a hotbed for cycling,
where he'll get more national
exposure
"My performance there
(Nevada City, Calif ) is indicative
of the high level of ability I have
the potential for," said Sanders.
"I beat a few national class

riders Of course a lot of people
can say that, it's just a matter of
going on from there and keep
improving
“I've seen others break into
the national class, and I feel I'm
capable of it, too.”
John Beckman, who was
recruited off the streets of Port
land like Sanders, burst on the
national scene in 1979 with top
finishes in big races, and has
been a two-time national points
race champion in 1981 and
1982
"I don't think I will make as a
dramatic start as John. I just
want to do well in Colorado and
be under the eye of the national
team coaches Hopefully, I'll be
able to race on the national
team, and maybe go on and
race in Europe,” said Sanders
Those are big aspirations for
someone who thought cycling
would be "just a phase that I
would go through before going
on to something else," but the
five-time state champion looks
to have a good shot
The Epilogue, which will close
out the season, will feature four
divisions and will begin at 12

Warren
requires
surgery
Oregon's track and cross
country All-American, Leann
Warren, will undergo arthros
copic surgery Saturday morning
lor an injured knee
"I’m 95 percent certain that
she will redshirt this season,”
said Oregon cross country and
track coach Tom Heinonen
"The surgery is just the last in a
line of alternatives we've had "
Warren injured her knee early
In July while beginning her
training tor the cross country
season
The loss of Warren, who was
the top runner on the Duck
cross country team, means the
Ducks can realistically forego
any hopes of winning this year's
NCAA cross country cham
pionship
"We will still have a good
team," said Heinonen "But an
ytime a team loses their No 1
runner they can't expect to be
as good as hoped I think we
can still finish in the top five, and
maybe the top three "
