The Oregon women's cross country team came
a considerable distance from winning the Cal
Invitational Saturday, but the trip south can still be
called beneficial for the Ducks
Stanford, as in 1981, had an easy time with the
Ducks over the hilly 5,000-meter course at Bel
mont's Crystal Spring Reservoir, just outside of
Berkeley
Oregon's team total of 40 points was well
behind the Cards 19 The University of California
was third with 75. and Nevada-Reno was a distant
last with 99 points
Stanford's Kim Schnurpfiel took first place
honors with a 18 46 clocking The Cards' also
captured the next two places with Ceci Hopp and
Regina Jacobs finishing 16 49 and 17:01, re
spectively
Rosa Gutierrez continued to lead the Duck's
running attack The sophomore finished fourth in
17 17, but the only .pressure she felt over the final
part of the course was teammate Eryn Forbes,
who finished fifth—four seconds behind Gutier
rez
Oregon s freshman Kim Roth was eighth while
Allison Snow finished 10th, and Claudette
Groenendaal 13th Freshman Gretchen Nelson,
replacing flu bitten Linda Jacobsen, ended up
14th on the course she trained on in high school
Though Coach Tom Heinonen said he didn't
enter the meet with an\ expectations, he said
some important questions were answered
It was important to see how we stack up
against Stanford and establish how clearly
superior to Cal we are, he said of the outcome
The meet really didn t show us aU-ihat much,
because they (Stanford) have three of their top
eight injured, and we have three of our top five
from last season who didn t run
Oregon's All-American duo of Kathy Hayes and
Leann Warren both are suffering from injuries,
while tumor Lisa Martin is trying to regain her
All-American form of a year ago
Heinonen said Hayes might" run in Saturday's
Willamette Invitational, but added he will know
definitely by mid-week Martin is, "a little rusty,"
but will compete Saturday, according to Heinon
en
Stanford did compete without three of their top
runners, but the racers that did run has left
Heinonen with an evaluation of the Cards
They showed their team appears to be con
siderably deeper (than last season) Their top five
handled our top five, so that shows you someth
ing, he said
Stanford Coach Brooks Johnson's training
methods are very different from Heinonen s
practices, or for that matter, most other coaches
Johnson has his team prepared to the fullest for
the first meet, and hopes for them to continue at
the same level of success the remainder of the
season
