Duck offense 24; special teams 22

While there was little doubt from the opening kickoff Saturday
that Southern Cal would hand Oregon its fifth straight football
defeat, the question of which facet of this Duck team will score the
most points this season became more interesting than ever
For the record, USC overpowered Oregon 38-7 at smoggy Los
Angeles Coliseum But the only score which has Duck followers in
suspense is offense 24. special teams 22. defense 2
The special teams closed the gap in the scoring race when
freshman safety Doug Judge blocked a punt and linebacker Todd
Welch picked off the ball at the 3-yard-line and carried it into the
end zone That was the only eye in the smog for the Ducks
Oregon's punt return squad has now reached the enemy’s end
zone three times The offense hit paydirt three times in Seattle a
week ago. but was unable to add to that total against the stingy
Trojans
Saturday's tally came on USC s only punt of the first half On
fourth down at the USC 23-yard-iine. Judge broke through un
touched and batted the ball high into the air • tf came to rest in the
arms of Welch at the three It was the most effective play through
the air for Oregon all afternoon
The tone of the game was set on the first play when Kevin Lusk
had his pass intercepted and returned for a touchdown Lusk threw
to the wrong man. and USC's free safety Joey Browner snared the
ball and went 34 yards the other way to give USC a 7-0 lift It was all
downhill from there for the Ducks
By the time the first half had come mercifully to an end the
Troians had a 31-7 lead The hosts had outgained Oregon 326-75,
run 53 plays to Oregon's 18. and held the ball for 21 04 of the first 30
minutes
Oregon coach Rich Brooks called the first half the worst 30
minutes an Oregon team has played during his six years at the helm
Brooks cited a lack of intensity and a lack of execution as the two
reasons for the disaster
I feel that players ought to be ready to play every time they
take the field Brooks said He noted the delay in leaving Eugene
Friday, which made practicing in Los Angles impossible, and the
interception on the game's first play as reasons for the team's lack
of spark But. that's my responsibility.' he added
Not surprisingly. Brooks expressed pleasure with the efforts of
the special teams this season Special teams is the one fairly
consistent phase of our game so far " he said "We've’done
extremely well with our punt block and punt returns Brooks had a
punt block called when Judge broke through
The one aspect of special teams that Brooks feels could use a
little work is the field goal unit The only area I think we need to
improve on is the field goal team, but they haven t had a lot of
chances lately '
Tim Wise got one shot at the goalposts Saturday from 51 -yards
out but was a little wide
Brooks described the special teams as a very important part of
the game "We have obviously spent a lot of time this year working
on it And it has paid off
The other good news for Brooks is the bye his team has next
weekend Normally, I don't like to have byes ," the coach said but
it couldn't come at a better time for us
Brooks said the bye would allow his to recuperate from a wide
range of injuries which have ravaged the ranks The other positive
aspect of the bye is that it will give him time to concentrate on
improving the execution on offense before the Ducks travel to
Berkeley to face Cal in two weeks
The Ducks can use the rest after playing two powerhouses
back-to-back like USC and top-ranked Washington last week
Brooks said it is hard to compare the two teams because of the
difference in his team's effort in the two games
I would say that USC's defensive front is a little better than
Washington's and their offensive line is is definately better than
Washington's," Brooks commented "It would be a good game
Too bad they don't play, he added, referring to the fact that the
Troians and Huskies don t play each other this season
