A benefit concert for three
activist organizations will be
held tonight at the First Chris
tian Church in Eugene
Music for the concert will be
provided by pianist/poet Steven
Labensart and his wife Sylvia
Proceeds from the concert will
go to Greenpeace. Amnesty
International and the Oregon
Nuclear Weapons Freeze
Campaign
"Music is a vehicle for peace
building," says concert
promoter Marty Immerman
"Steven's music is a carrier
wave, carrying feelings and
ideas right for the times "
Labensart says his music
style is influenced by his train
ing as a jazz and classical pia
nist as well as his travels in Asia
and Africa
The concert will celebrate the
humanistic ideals of the three
organizations, Immerman says
"There is a deep thought for
human life underlying these
groups, and they share a con
cern for the earth and all its
inhabitants They're trying to
diminish the technology of
violence in favor of an attitude
of mutual trust and caring."
Amnesty International moni
tors human rights violations in
countries around the world
Greenpeace funds expeditions
and legislative efforts to stop the
commercial killing of seals, dol
phins and whales
