Vice president plays catch-up
to fill empty offices, turmoil
By Rich Burr
CM the Emerald
Turmoil and vacancies have
greeted Debi Lance, the new
acting ASUO vice president of
state and academic affairs
Two of the three vacancies in
Lance’s office exist because of
the resignation of Ann Portal,
former vice president of state
and academic affairs, and the
dismissal of David Berns,
legislative assistant, during the
summer
Experience will be heavily
emphasized in hiring their
replacements, she says
“For a few weeks we will be
playing catch up," Lance’says,
adding that hiring experienced
personnel will be critical in
making up for lost time
Portal will be missed because
of her expertise and profes
sionalism, she says
Although Portal cited frustra
tion with organization in the
ASUO for her resignation,
Lance says she does not see
such organizational problems in
the ASUO
Portal may have become
frustrated with other ASUO
departments when she should
have concentrated solely on her
office, Lance says
Because of the personnel
problems, the ASUO state and
academic affairs office lost an
opportunity to track legislators
during the summer to determine
the supporters and enemies of
higher education, she adds
Besides encountering turmoil
in her office, Lance encounters
some additional confusion
when people attempt to
captilize her first and last name
She spells her name in lower
case because of an uneventful
birthday
"On my fifteenth birthday
nothing happened." Lance
remembers “So I decided to
change my name from D-e-b-b-y
to D-e-b-i “
"Then I decided it looked
better lowercase," she
continues “I've been doing it

Tor iu years Lance nas never
legally changed her name to
lowercase
Besides correcting confusion
on her name, Lance wants to
minimize friction between the
Student University Relations
Council, the Student University
Activies Board, and the ASUO
over who controls the legislative
lobbying effort
The establishment of a
Legislative Council would coor
dinate legislative efforts and,
when appropriate, have the
organizations work together,
she says
"Things are so critical in
education, this year especially,
that it's ridiculous to have these
interconflicts when we re all
working for the same thing,"
Lance says
Another program Lance plans
on implementing is training 10
to 15 student volunteers for
lobbying The volunteer lob
byists will supplement ASUO
office lobbyists
Lance will also use contacts
made when she was the student
adviser on the State Board of
Education
“I know quite a few people
and I will bring them in to help
make decisions so we have
more information to operate
with," she explains.
One thing that may be an
obstacle while lobbying is the
attitude of mistrust among
students toward administrators,
Lance adds
"I don't understand why
students are leery of adminstra
tors." she says
Meanwhile, Lance will try to
complete her primary and most
important objective hiring an
experienced staff
