Cheapest food prices available
at Fred Meyer and Waremart
By BARBARA HICKS
Students who seek the least
exponsive grocery stores may
find that they will save money by
traveling outside the University
area
In a recent survey of the
prices of 10 staple foods, Fred
Meyer Food Store, 650 Q St. in
Springfield, and Waremart Food
Store, 2101 W 11th Ave. in
Eugene, looked significantly
better at the cash register than
the closer Safeway, McKays
Market, or Albertsons.
Although the shopper will
need a car to drive the nearly
four miles from campus to Fred
Meyer, the expenditure for gas
might well be cancelled out by
the savings on food Besides
having lower prices on many
name and store brand items.
Fred Meyer has a Low Price
Island of generic goods, which
claims a 10- 30-percent savings
over name brands. The Island
includes an array of rice, beans,
tomato sauce, cake mixes,
spices and canned goods, as
well as paper and laundry
products
The shopper may not get the
quantites they desire, since
generics tend to run in limited
sizes
Waremart Food Store is three
miles from campus, it is within
walking distance of Westmor
eland Family Student Housing
It is also a bargain for campus
dwellers who wish to come a
long way Heartier students
might wish to bicycle the
straight flat distance down West
11th Ave.
Waremart, which is open 24
hours a day during the week,
stocks a large selection of bulk
items such as flour, sugar and
oats, that gives the shopper the
luxury of choosing the exact
amount they wish to buy.
Waremart also carries gener
ic products, which are dis
bursed throughout the store for
easy comparison shopping with
other brands

McKay 's supermarket ranked fifth in a survey of prices among local
stores
Albertsons, 1675 W 18th
Ave . did not do well in the sur
vey, though its location on the
way to Westmoreland Family
Student Housing might be a
savings in terms of conven
ience. A bicyclist living on cam
pus could ride to Albertson's
with little trouble — it is five
blocks closer to the west side of
campus than Waremart
Safeway, 145 E. 18th Ave.,
which is within walking distance
from campus, fared slightly bet
ter than Albertson's, though it
does not stock generic items
like the other four stores.
McKay's Market, 1906 Frank
lin Blvd . located within sight of
the residence hails on the east
side of campus, might be a good
place to pick up a few odds and
ends for the sake of conven
ience. but it definitely lost the
war of the pocketbook in the
survey
In all five stores, the store
brands were consistently
cheaper than the big name
brands, though they did not al
ways hold up against generic
items or name brands that were
on sale A wise shopper should
watch the newspapers for
specials, and compare those
prices with the generic and
store brands before deciding
what to buy and where.
