Can’t turn on the power?
Power, phone,
trash service
easily available
By DAVID STEINMETZ
Making an apartment a home
takes more than a carful of furn
iture and knicknacks
Utilities and services, like
electricity to run the stereo, gas
to heat the pizza in the oven,
and a phone to call home are
just as important
Whenever renting, a tenant
should ask the landlord about
what utilities are included in the
rent, who provides each one,
and whether they need to be
turned on
The University's married
family housing does not dis
connect electricity or gas ser
vice, allowing residents to save
the reconnect charge, accord
ing to Sue Tamiesie, housing
director.
University dorms provide
heat, water, and garbage ser
vice, but phone service is left to
the individual preference of
each resident
Cable TV is not available to
individual rooms in the Univer
sity Inn or dorms, but is usually
hooked up to television sets in
the dorm TV rooms.
All of Eugene's water and
electricity is through the
Eugene Water and Electric
Board
Electricity is usually shut off
between tenants, but even if it is
still on EWEB should be called
at 484-6016 to put it in the new
tenant s name
There is a $10 charge includ
ed in the first bill when an ac
count changes names
A deposit is not required un
less prior service created a poor
credit record
Although EWEB's electricity
rates are scheduled to increase
16 percent in November, they
will still be the lowest in the Lane
County area, according to Tom
Santee, EWEB community in
formation representative
Residential consumers are
now charged $4 50, plus 2 237
cents per kilowatt-hour

Picking a phone at a Pacific Northwest Bell phone center doesn't
have to be a mundane task
November will reflect the in
crease, which will amount to $5
per month plus 2 611 cents per
kilowatt hour
Santee says EWEB will
provide free energy audits to
any residence, but this is only
done once for each house, so
interested renters should con
tact the landlord first
There is a six month waiting
list for this service, Santee says
Water heater insulation jack
ets are also available from
EWEB at no charge.
Eugene’s sewer charge.
$4 25 per month, is included in
EWEB's water bill
EWEB charges $4 40 per
month plus 52 9 cents per 1000
gallons of water used, and this
rate will increase next year,
Santee says
Apartment rent usually in
cludes water, but a house ten
ant should expect to pay it
separately.
Northwest Natural Gas Co. is
the supplier of gas to the
Eugene area
New tenants should call them
at 342-3661 and have a new
account opened, which
requires a $30 refundable
deposit.
The gas sometimes needs to
be turned on. but there is no
charge for this
To get an idea of what gas
bills to expect, users may ask for
the lowest, highest, and average
gas use per month for their re
sidence in the past
There is a basic charge of
$2 50 per month, plus a rate
based on the number of BTU's
used
Northwest Natural Gas also
offers free audits, but this
should be discussed with the
landlord
