Oregon fumbles away victory

SEATTLE - It's incredible
how the complexity of a football
game can be determined by just
one snap of the football
But Saturday afternoon at
Husky Stadium in Seattle, the
Oregon football game against
the Huskies of Washington was
determined by that — just one
play
It came late in the game With
the Ducks leading the top
ranked Huskies 21-17 with 14
minutes remaining in the game,
Terrance Jones took a handoff
and went over left guard But
waiting to meet him at the hole
was Washington linebacker Ken
Driscoll, who hit him like a brick
wall and forced Jones to cough
up the pigskin
After 10 plays and 76 yards,
the Huskies found the end zone
to go ahead 24-21 on their way
to an eventual 37-21 win
"I was really surprised it was
that good of a hit," said Jones of
Driscoll's tackle "It was a good
stick It makes it tough to hang
onto the ball when you get it that
hard."
"Jones got stuck real hard,"
Oregon coach Rich Brooks
said "Driscoll is a hell of a
player and he really kissed him
"There was a big swing on
that play," Brooks continued
"Everything was going our way
when we got the ball, then it
went right back the other way
when we fumbled to them
"If we would have taken it in
for the touchdown we would
have been in great shape.”
Regardless of the turnovers,
the Ducks still played a good
game against a team which is
the No. 1-ranked team in the
nation.
On Oregon’s first series, the

marched 80 yards in 10 plays,
highlighted by a 23-yard scoring
pass from halfback Harry
Billups to a leaping Osborne
Thomas for the Ducks' first of
fensive touchdown of the game
— and the season.
Brooks, understandably, felt
that touchdown was special.
"That first touchdown really
opened a lot of people's eyes,"
Brooks said "Taking the ball
right down the field and scoring
did a lot for us."
The Oregon offense, which
had been the brunt of many
jokes after the first three games
of the season for its inability to
score, may have set those jokes
on the shelf for the remainder of
the season Against the Hus

have an offense
The Ducks rolled up 307
yards — 162 on the ground and
another 145 through the air —
good for three touchdowns

Setters eighth in Provo
The Oregon women's vol
leyball team completed a whirl
wind tour of Utah this weekend
by finishing eighth out of 21
teams in the Brigham Young
University Invitational
The Ducks, who won three
out of seven matches during the
tournament and are now 7-4 on
the season, got off to a good
start in the tourney Thursday
night by beating Montana State
15-8, 15-9 and upsetting 18th
ranked Utah State 16-14, 15-13
“We just had a good all
around effort from everyone,"
said coach Chris Voelz
On Friday Oregon lost to
Long Beach State 15-13, 5-15,
12-15 but bounced back to
defeat Texas Tech 15-7, 6-15,
15-11 The Ducks then
advanced to Friday night play by
knocking oft Long Beach 15-9
in a one-game playoff
Unfortunately, the women lost
senior team captain Anita Ens
worth to an injury in that game
In the first match Friday night,
the tired Ducks lost to 13th
ranked BYU 3-15, 4-15. 14-16
despite regaining the services
of Stephanie Tambe. who had
returned from a ligament injury
“We played a lot of volleyball
this weekend, and it started to
show in that game,” said Voelz
“We could have played a lot
better than we did against
BYU," she added
Oregon finished up the tour
nament on Saturday night with
losses to Southern Illinois and
Utah State
