Students get elections advice
Student leaders learned about legislative
issues as higher education received more support
in a legislative conference Friday sponsored by
the ASUO and the Oregon Student Lobby
State Rep Margie Hendriksen (D-Eugene)
and Rep Mary Burrows (R-Eugene), both can
didates for the 1983 Oregon Legislature, pledged
unfailing support to state colleges and universi
ties and equally strong opposition to Ballot Mea
sure 3 while speaking to student leaders from
around the state on legislative issues.
Hendriksen, who is challenging Republican
Sen George Wingard in District 20, called the
property tax limitation measure "disastrous."
The measure not only threatens higher
education s share of the state general fund but
"attempts to take the power away from the peo
ple," she said
Burrows, the incumbent in the District 41
race, told the student government officers at
tending the conference that they should actively
participate in the upcoming election
“There is no limit to the amount of pressure
you can supply. You've got legislators out there
you must persuade," Burrows said.
Burrows asked the students to get to those
people outside of university districts" and change
votes
Bill Lemman, vice-chancellor of the State
System of Higher Education, and Barbara Mitchell
of the Oregon Education Coordinating
Commission also were present at the meeting
Lemman stressed the importance of higher
education, listing research, computer program
ming, marketing and international trade as a few
of the college programs that “contribute to the
economic recovery and development of the
state.”
