The Daisy Ducks quizzed football coach Rich Brooks at their first luncheon of the year.
More than sport’s supporters

Marie Upshaw, this year's president of the
Daisy Ducks, says the women's booster group's
main purpose is "to make students feel more
comfortable being away from home "
"We bake cookies, we re a support group on
the same basis as a mother for the men and
women," Upshaw stresses the "and women."
While the Daisy Ducks may be tried and true
athletic supporters, few are jocks themselves
According to Upshaw, Dick Enright, a former
University football coach, was instrumental in
forming the booster group 11 years ago to get the
women involved
"I’ve been with the Daisy Ducks since the
onset, at the Eugene Hotel, about 10 years ago,”
Helen Puscas says at the first Tuesday luncheon
of the year "We didn't know a lot about football
then ”
Upshaw agrees with Puscas The Daisy
Ducks formed as a means to "inform ladies about
football,'' Upshaw says
Informed they are The women grilled head
football coach, Rich Brooks for the better part of
40 minutes They had questions about who was
red shirting, who would be at the center position
and why Brook's had gone from the Power I
formation to a veer offense
The women even demanded to know if the
Ducks had reported to fall camp in good shape
Brooks told them that Ed Rhone, a junior defen
sive lineman had dropped from 310 pounds to a
svelte 271 as he d been instructed to do The
women gave a gasp of approval — like any good
mom would
The Marching Band
When the Duck football squad takes the field
for the last three home games this season, the
music of the "Fighting Ducks Marching Band will
play an instrumental part in the contest
The band, led by its new director Bill Norfleet,
former Grants Pass High band director, will be at
least 120 members strong this year, if Norfleet has
his way
"The Marching band has been dependant on
music majors for the past few years," he says,
“and I want to get some non-music majors in
volved ”
His main goal for this year is to recruit more
members The band offers two credits through the
school of music and is open to all University
students
Due to budget shortages, the band will not
play at any of the away games, with the exception
of the Civil War game in Corvallis.
Under Norfleet's instruction, the Grants Pass
High band won the state championships the past
two years
The Rally Squad
Dancing to the music of the marching band
and providing a little hoopla of their own will be
this year's rally squad The squad is composed of
six women and two men.
The rally team will concentrate primarily on
dances this year due to the shortage of men. says
Mike Maulding, one of the two coordinators
"The main difference from last year,'' Mauld
ing says, "Is that we will work more as a dance
team "
"Lots of coordinated dancing is the key,’’ he
adds
The smaller size of the squad was partly
planned and partly unplanned, he says.
We wanted fewer women because their
dance styles would be easier to blend " says
Maulding. "But we wanted as many guys as we
had girls."
The reason for the lack of men, Maulding
explains, is a lack of interest Only three men
showed up for the tryouts
Both Maulding and DeDe Murray, the other
rally coordinator, were on the rally squad during
the 70 s, and say they plan to bring that style back
to the squad
The squad will be at all the home games and
as many away games as they can afford. Mauldmq
