Temperance and clear minds greet pledges

are in the Greek system.

To pledge or not to pledge,
that is the question this week for
approximately 600 freshmen at
the University fraternities and
sororities.
The Interfraternity Council
has moved fall rush to orienta
tion week. Other rush changes
include making fraternity rush
dry and stressing personal
counseling for each rushee
"We've decided to make rush
dry" and charge a $10 fee, "to
keep people s minds clear’’
during rush week, says Steve
Schrader, interfraternity council
rush chairman. "Some guy will
go over to a house, have a few
beers, and then pledge," Sch
rader explained Now they will
pledge before drinking
Dry rush, “is a trend nation
wide," says Marti Chaney, Pan
hellenic advisor. Dean of
students Robert Bowlin agrees
and adds this is the third year of
limits on alcohol and partying

want to drink will anyway, but
most pledges obey the rules

Fraternity houses are hoping
for 300 to 350 men to rush, ac
cording to Bowlin. “About half
pledge at that time,” he says
Both sororities and fraterni
ties have held counseling work
shops for their members with
the help of University coun
seling staff The purpose of the
workshops was to teach house
members counseling tech
niques for prospective rushees
so the best decision can be
reached: to pledge or not to
pledge
“The one difference,” in this
year's rush, Bowlin says, "is
emphasis on rush counselors
They are not doing work for
their houses, but for the Greek
system "
Schrader says the fraternities
are completely revamping their
rush system to model those of
the sororities This includes go
ing without alcohol, taking out
ads in papers and radio stations
and notifying hometown news
papers of pledges. It also in
cludes compiling a complete
history of rush students —
though the fraternity system will
not go so far as to computerize
the information at Oregon Hall
as do the sororities
Dry rush, moving rush to

terfraternity Council to make
rush "fit in a little better" amid
academics, according to Chan

The fraternities intend to
conduct a follow-up study of
students who choose not to
plege "If he really has an inter
est. the guys at the house will
know Some people don't show
a lot of emotion it is impor
tant to have contact after rush,"
Schrader says

in the EMU breezeway Monday
through Wednesday this week
The sororities will be having an
information session Tuesday at
