Centers offer child care

Finding child care is always a
problem for the student with a
family The University’s depart
ment of student affairs offers a
wide variety of licensed child
care programs at five different
centers
The EMU Child Care Center,
located in a specially designed
facility on the ground floor of the
student union, serves up to
eight children from 15 months to
two and a half years in its tod
dler program, 16 children from
two and a half years in its
preschool program, and 24
children from 1 to 6 years in its
evening program.
Children may be enrolled on
an hourly basis from 8:30 a m. to
4:30 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 10
p.m on Monday through Friday
when the University is in ses
sion Times can be scheduled in
advance or as drop-ins when
space is available
The University Child Care and
Development Center offers
three programs in home-like
settings on the east edge of the
campus Moss House serves a
maximum of 23 preschoolers
from 2Vi to 5 years, 7:30 a m to

day basis. Green House takes
12 toddlers from 15 months to
2'h years on the same

lard House enrolls 12 toddlers
between 8 a m and 1 p.m. on an
hourly basis
Up to 30 children between the
ages of five and ten can be
supervised from 2:30 p.m. to
5:30 p.m. in the CCDC after
school program at Edison
School. Children from Condon
School walk over to Edison with
an adult
Cost at the EMU Center is
$1.50 per hour for toddlers and
$1.20 for preschoolers. At Moss
House the cost is $1.10 per
hour; at Green House, $1,50;
and at Villard House, $1.60 The
after-school program is $1.10
per hour
All the centers have attractive
play yards and are amply
provided with both indoor and
outdoor equipment, including
toys, balls, art supplies, vehi
cles. climbing structures and
even garden plots
They are managed by a full
time director, Mary Curtis
Gramley, and 2 to 4 full-time
caregivers per center, who are
trained in early childhood
education. To maintain an
adult/child ratio of no more
than 4-to-1 for toddlers and
1-to-6 for preschoolers, the
centers employ University
students and they welcome
volunteers.
Field trips are frequent, to
various parts of campus, neigh
borhood playgrounds and other
points of interest, such as the
fire station and bakery.
All of these activities con
tribute to the centers' goal of
developing the whole child
through cognitive, physical,
social and emotional growth
within a nurturing and stable
environment
Registration at the EMU
Center occurs on the school
registration days for each term,
which are Sept. 23 and 24 for fall
term. At the other four centers,
pre-registration for the whole
school year is possible At all
centers, registration can also
occur throughout the term as
space permits Student families
are given preference
