University joins arts center opening

University performing arts
groups and faculty members will
highlight University participa
tion in the grand opening of the
new Eugene Performing Arts
Center Oct 3
Billed as the " University of
Oregon and the City of Eugene
Presents an Open House for the
Community,'' the days's events
include music, dance, theater,
and lecture presentations both
inside and outside of the new
facility
Featured will be "An Evening
With the University Performing
Arts Faculty” at 8:30 p.m in the
newly named Silva Concert Hall.
The recital will showcase the
Oregon Woodwind Quintet, the
Oregon Piano Quartet, the dan
ce department, and excerpts
from "Harvey.”
University Pres. Paul Olum
will join city officials in opening
ceremonies at noon. These will
be followed by a variety of
daylong performances in the
Concert Hall and the Soreng
Theater, among them the

University marching band will
play outside in the plaza
University professors will par
ticipate in a distinguished lec
ture series all day in the Confer
ence Center. Economics
professor Ed Whitelaw will dis
cuss the current economic si
tuation to open the 1982-83 Arts
and Humanities Lecture Series
Begun last year, the series
attempts to bring "town and
gown together," according to
Mary Hudzikiewicz of University
Relations. It was believed that
speakers could reach a wider
audience in the new conference
center than on campus.
Gene Bressler and Ken
O'Connell will conduct a pro
gram on computer graphics and
associate physics professor
David Sokoloff will deliver an
illustrated lecture on holo
graphy — three-dimensional
laser images
Cecil Matson from Portland
will speak on the "History of
Pioneer Theater in Oregon."
Tours will be conducted at
various times, and refreshments
will be provided by Coca-Cola
and Chef Francisco
The grand opening celebra
tion itself begins Friday with a
parade at 11 30 a m The theme,
"Front Row Centre!," will be
highlighted by bands, floats,
and even elephants. Grand
opening events continue the
entire week leading up to Oct 3
That day's schedule originally
belonged exclusively to the
University City officials sug
gested a cooperative presenta
tion to feature performances by
community people as well.
“It's really very appropriate."
says University spokesperson
Jan Warren.
The day’s events will be tied in
with the traditional convocation
on Oct. 4, Warren says.
The convocation begins with
a full academic procession and
an address by Stanford

nedy in the Library quadrangle
Kennedy, who is a nationally

has forced many artists to
search for other livelihoods and
many struggling galleries to
close down, there is still a mar
ket for all types of art. and a
heavy sprinkling of galleries of
fering shelters for local artists
