Based on a book titled, "Are You A Target,” the
west University neighborhood's self-defense classes
"really get into the philosophy of rape,” Maclean says
Women attending the classes learn to break evident
patterns that rapists follow
"Almost all rapists will test someone,” Maclean
explains. "The testing could be an hour to several days,
a month. Our goal is basically to teach women how not
to be victims And that's more than just physical
defense "
The classes involve " a lot of psychology, a lot of
information they need to get, a lot of myths they need to
have dispelled
"Instead of having your first reaction be fear, have
it be anger That's a learned thing
"Women have a hesitancy to yell and scream and
shout,” Maclean says So classes practice yelling to
break down those inhibitions
"The advanced class is more physical and less
the ry All the target points are learned and how to go
for them All human beings, no matter how big or small,
have definite vulnerable spots, " Maclean says
It also gives instruction on dealing with what do do
if the attacker has a weapon But how far an individual
goes into combat instruction is a personal decision, she
adds
To respond to an individual in trouble, WUN has
initiated a Safehouse program
"This program utilizes neighborhood households
as designated safe' houses that are prepared to render
short-term emergency assistance to victims or those in
fear of crime," according to a Safehouse newsletter
A yellow Safehouse sign is hung in the window of
designated houses Thirty-five such signs hang in the
Whiteaker neighborhood, where reported rapes have
dropped by 40 percent since the 1980 implementation
of a Safehouse program there
Safehouse participants are trained by the Rape
Crisis Network The program originated as a rape
prevention effort But "safe" houses are prepared to
render short-term emergency assistance to anyone
victimized by or in fear of crime, says Edelka Shawn,
Safehouse staffperson A Safehouse member has the
choice to either let someone in or just make a phone
call, Shawn says
The visibility of the program also acts as a deterrent
to property crimes such as vandalism and burglary,
Safehouse literature claims.
Maclean expects Safehouse to begin in the Univer
sity neighborhood during November
To further anti-crime visibility and awareness, the
west University neighborhood is also participating in
the formation of a city-wide neighborhood watch or
ganization
Whether police will be able to implement it is
questionable because of recent personnel reductions
in the COP team, Maclean says Those reductions came
as a result of cuts in this year’s city budget.
But the cuts haven’t dampened the enthusiasm of
COP team officer April Norman, who believes that
trained neighborhood volunteers could conduct home
security checks as part of the program, leaving the
two-officer COP team (which once numbered five
