Campus area tallies
lowest voter turnout
By Dane Claussen

The stereotypical University
student or faculty member is
liberal-leaning and politically
active, a follower in the foot
steps of the University’s anti
Vietnam demonstrators of 10
years ago
But those stereotypes don’t
fit, according to Lane County
elections and ASUO officials
The University district, the
213th Precinct, has the worst
voting percentage record of the
county’s 181 precincts and has
had that distinction as long as
anyone can remember, says
David Spriggs, a deputy county
clerk in the elections division
The University district averages
a voter turnout of 5.8 percent.
Recent election turnouts in
the 213th Precinct have been:
March 30 — 42 percent; May 18
— 6 6 percent; June 29 — .58
percent; and Aug. 10— 84 per
cent The March 30th election’s
42 percent represents five
votes
“When you're going to
school, you have other things
on your mind,’’ Spriggs says
"Yes, you're interested (in poli
tics) but by the end of the
day you have your mind other
places ”
Spriggs says that University
students are also more
conservative than many would
guess
There are currently 1,164
people registered in the 213th
Precinct, which includes 435
Democrats, 382 Republicans,
315 nonpartisans, 29 indepen
dents and 3 Libertarians
The county and state govern
ments want to encourage
students to vote, but caution
them to be aware of pitfalls,
Spriggs says
Students with permanent res
idency in a county other than
Lane should register in their
home districts and vote absen
tee unless they want to change
residency, Spriggs says.
Out-of-state students should
also register in their home dis
tricts and vote absentee,
Spriggs says Students attend
ing the University for only a year
or two will face out-of-state tui
tion when they return home if
they have registered in Oregon,
and vice versa, he says
Registering to vote is easy,
and voter registration cards are
available from both the Elec
tions Division, 135 W. Sixth
Ave., and from the ASUO,
located in Suite 4 of the EMU.
To find out which district you
live in, or for further information
about Lane County elections or
voter registration, call the Elec
tions Division at 687-4234.
