A full slate of the ‘‘living arts ' — in
cluding theater, opera and ballet — is
scheduled this year in Eugene, and many
of the performances offer student dis
counts
As possible study breaks this year, a
student can choose to spend an evening
dancing with a magical Firebird, fall into
a ‘ Deathtrap," attend a hilarious New
Year's Eve costume ball, or travel to the 1
sultry New Orleans of Blanche DuBois.
Just beginning its 54th season, the
Very Little Theatre is a constant in
Eugene's often turbulent performing arts
community.
Located in a rustic, brown wood buil
ding at 2350 Hilyard St., this volunteer
oriented community theater group will
present five shows during the 1982-83
season VLT will open its season on Sept.
23 with the thriller “Deathtrap,” then will
offer the comedy A Company of
Wayward Saints," which opens Nov. 18;
three one-act comedies billed as
"Showcase; An Evening of One-Acts,”
beginning Jan. 20; the Tony Award-win
ning "Morning s at Seven” opening
March 17; and the musical melodrama
"East of the Rockies,” which begins May
12.
The Oregon Repertory Theatre opens
its 1982-83 season in the midst of a major
fund drive The company began having
financial problems last year when it
moved from the Atrium building to the
Eugene Hotel.
But financial problems haven’t
prevented ORT from assembling a rich,
busy performing schedule. Billed as a
"Festival of American Theatre,” the
coming season includes the Tennessee
Williams classic “A Streetcar Named
Desire" running Oct. 10-31, and "I’m
Getting My Act Together and Taking It on
the Road” on Nov 28
ORT will begin the new year with “On
Golden Pond.” running Jan 9-30;
Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya” will open Feb
13; and the season will conclude with
* Picnic,” opening March 20 For further
information, contact the Oregon Reper
tory Theater at 222 E Broadway Ave , or

The 1982-83 season marks a leap for
ward for two of Eugene s youngest pei
* forming groups. After a total of ten years
performing in churches, hotels and high
schools, the Eugene Opera Company
and the Eugene Ballet Company will both
be moving into the Eugene Performing
Arts Center
Leaping onto center stage Sept. 25 is
the Eugene Ballet Company, with their
"Gala” evening, including Stravinsky's
"Firebird.” During the holiday season
they will present Tchaikovsky's classic
Nutcracker,’’ and the three-year-old
company will conclude March 5-6 with
the ballet “Coppelia” by Delibas
The Eugene Opera is planning four
productions for its seventh season on
stage On Oct. 9, the melodies of Puccini
will fill Silva Concert Hall when the opera
presents' "La Boehme.” Following the
Dec. 31st performance of Strauss' "Die
Fiedermaus” will be a New Year’s Eve
party, and the opera's season continues
with "Don Pasquale” on May 7, and
Gilbert and Sullivan's comic operetta
“Yeomen of the Guard" June 23-26. For
further information, both the Eugene
Ballet Company and the Eugene Opera
are located at 1231 Olive St. The box
office phone number is 687-0020.
With a total of at least ten plays and
musicals, three ballets and four operas,
1982-83 should prove to be an exciting
season for performing arts lovers in
Eugene.
