Added to that, some of his crew has
been showing quite well at summer
meets and road races. Eryn Forbes
broke school records in the 5,000 and
10,000, Warren smashed Mary Decker
Tabb’s collegiate record in the 1,500 and
Rosa Guiterrez won several San Fran
cisco area road races
The good signs have been dam
pened somewhat by leg injuries, none
Heinonen could considered devastating,
but
Warren has been sidelined for a
month and a half, Lisa Martin stayed
away from summer competition al
together after red shirting last track sea
son, and Kathy Hayes has been hobbled
lately
Not one to appear overly pessimis
tic, Heinonen says there may be a
“blessing in disguise" lurking among the
injuries — it may help his runners peak
later — at the regional and national
meets
Heinonen is concerned, thouah
"Leann and Hayes are a bit behind
schedule no, they are behind
schedule,” Heinonen says, but the 37
year-old coach's hair won't become gray
after the first four or five meets, even if
the Ducks face Stanford at the Cal
Invitational early on.
' They decimated us last year,”
Heinonen recalls, "but we got them
later.”
As Heinonen puts it, “nobody is
going to remember who won the Cal
Invitational " Or more succinctly:
“Nobody remembers who won the
other races, the day after nationals ” And
the day after nationals, if Heinonen is
correct, nobody will forget the Ducks
Oregon’s top eight:
At the national meet, senior Leann
Warren rose from 140th as a freshman to
second as a junior Such progression
gives Heinonen reason to smile "If she
can hang with the leaders, she’s the one
with the fastest kick," Heinonen says
“Kick" means a sub-53-second quar
termile Warren holds collegiate records
in the 800, 1,500 and 3,000
Eryn Forbes, another senior, fin
ished 13th at the NCAA nationals last
year. Forbes is a four-time all-American,
once in cross country, three times in
track She holds the school mark in the
5,000 and 10,000
Right behind Forbes is sophomore
Kathy Hayes, who broke the collegiate
mark in the 3,000 Hayes finished 16th at
the national meet and was all-America in
both track and cross country as a fresh
man
Fourth on the Oregon list is Lisa

and was named to the all-America team,

tional junior college champion in the
hurdles at Clackamas Community
College
Another stellar sophomore for the
Ducks is Rosa Guiterrez. Named all
America in track and cross country,
Heinonen is pleased with her transition
from Glendale, an "A" level high school to
the major college ranks Guiterrez
finished 58th at the NCAAs

Oregon's best recruiting years, is
Claudette Groenendaal. Running at the
number six spot, Groenendaal raced to
67th at Nationals
Fighting for the last position are
Canadian sophomore Ranza Clark and
senior Kathi Sommer. Clark finished
88th at nationals an made all-America in
track. Sommer, a transfer from Seattle
Pacific ran seventh for the Oregon squad
the first half of the year
The new two:
Heinonen seems to have a knack for
snagging Oregon's stellar prep runners
After last year's coup when he loaded his
squad with the cream of Oregon's crop,
Heinonen was not content to sit back and
wait Thus far, Kim Roth from Sprague
signed on with Oregon Roth has four
prep titles under her belt as well as a 10th
place finsh in the Kinney nationals
Ellen Schlotter of Medford also
hooked up with the Ducks Schlotter was
second to Roth in the prep 1,500 race
and finished the '81 prep cross country
season in fifth
