Voters approve levy
for law enforcement
Lane County voters approved
higher property taxes to support
law enforcement Tuesday but
turned down similar fund
requests for school districts
The one-year levy, raising $3
million to restore some of the
money cut from the District At
torney's office and the Sheriff’s
Department, passed by a com
fortable margin, with 20,316 vot
ing in favor of the tax and 18,429
voting against
About 25 percent of the
country's eligible voters cast
ballots, 10 points higher than
expected
Meanwhile, voters turned
down special tax requests from
three school districts and ap
proved a tax levy to support the
rural fire department in Zum
walt
Passage of the law enfor
cement levy marks the first time
voters have approved a tax in
crease since they turned down a
$10 million increase in the tax
base to improve the county’s
revenue last year Budget cuts
resulting from the levy failure
reduced District Attorney Pat
Horton’s office to 35 employees
from a high of 75 two years ago
’’It looks like we ll be able to
hire a few more attorneys” and
prosecute more cases, said a
satisfied Horton Tuesday night
as the first returns were an
nounced
Sheriff Dave Burks said he
may be able to rehire as many as
40 deputies who were laid off
following the earlier levy defeat
By voting to fund law enfor
cement Lane County voters
showed "they trust their own
judgement better than they trust
their elected official's,” Horton
said
