Holbo appointed vice provost
Paul Holbo, history professor
and former acting dean of the
University arts and sciences
college has been appointed vice
provost for academic affairs,
Provost Richard Hill has an
nounced
Holbo, 53, replaces Robert
Albrecht, vice provost from
1977 until this summer when he
resigned to become vice pre
sident for academic affairs at
the University of Northern
Colorado. Holbo’s appointment
is effective Aug 9
A member of the faculty since
1959, Holbo served as associate
dean of the college from 1970 to
1973, then as acting dean for
the following year
He has been elected to and
chaired several major faculty
committees including the
Faculty Advisory Council,
1978-80, and the Faculty Per
sonnel committee, 1975-77. He
also chaired the President's Ad
Hoc Committee on Housing and
the Library Collection, 1978-79,
and headed the search commit
tee for the University librarian
two years ago
"We are extremely fortunate
to have Professor Holbo accept
the position of vice provost He
has had demanding administra
tive assignments in the past and
he has been elected by the
faculty to serve on the Universi
ty's most influential commit
tees," Hill said in making the
announcement.
"He is a scholar who has
earned an international reputa
tion in his field He is a dedicat
ed teacher with a deep concern
for both undergraduate and
graduate education and his
devotion to the University is
above question," he noted
"I am looking forward to
working with him on a range of
problems that must be ad
dressed if the quality of the
University is to be preserved.”
A native of Wildrose, N O.,
Holbo earned his bachelor’s
degree from Yale University
with high honors, and his mas
ter’s and doctoral degrees from
the University of Chicago. He
was a lecturer at Chicago
before coming to Oregon
He is the author of a book
titled "United States Policies
Toward China” and the editor of
several others A new book,
‘‘Tarnished Expansion: The
Alaska Scandal, the Press, and
Congress, 1867-1871,” is in
press while another book,
"Harry S. Truman and the Cold
War," is in progress
He has also written chapters
for several books on foreign
policy and numerous journal
articles on foreign policy and
diplomatic history
Holbo currently is chairman of
the Committee on American
History for the College Entrance
Exam Board, and has served on
various committees for the or
ganization of American Histor
ians of American Foreign Rela
tions, and of Phi Beta Kappa,
liberal arts honorary

member of the Junior First Ci
tizen Selection Committee for
the Chamber of Commerce and
president of the Rubicon Socie
ty
He and his wife Kay have two
children
