    ASUO’s connection with coupons probed

A chiropractor who says he
paid to advertise in a coupon
pamphlet distributed at regis
tration has raised questions on
the ASUO’s connection with the
pamphlet.
ASUO Executive Coordinator
John Moore is investigating a
claim by Eugene chiropractor
Vip Short that his clinic entered
into an agreement with the
ASUO to have an advertisement
in the coupon pamphlet and to
have those books distributed
During registration, some
summer students picked up the
“Windfall Coupon Book1’ which
contains coupons for discounts
at several Eugene businesses
Short's clinic, the Avalon Chiro
practic Health Center, is not
listed in the pamphlet
Moore says he wants to know
Nesbit wins
Bower man
scholarship
Victoria Nesbit, a University
senior from Troutdale, is the
first recipient of a scholarship
from the Bill Bowerman Fund.
The new fund was created
through the University Founda
tion in December by the Scharpf
family, in honor of the Universi
ty’s well-known track coach of
the 1950s and 1960s.
At Bowerman’s request, the
scholarship is to be named each
year after great Oregon profes
sors of the past This year’s
scholarship honors Charles
Duncan, professor emeritus of
journalism, who is former dean
of the journalism school, as well
as former dean of faculties.
Under terms of the gift, the
fund's monies are to be used for
purchase of library books and
materials, for support of the
music school and its nationally
acclaimed Bach Festival, and
for scholarships for outstanding
senior students.
‘‘Victoria Nesbit is extremely
well qualified to receive this
scholarship,” says Russell Pic
ton, director of the University
Foundation.
The scholarship provides full
support for tuition, living ex
penses and books.
The Scharpfs created the
fund to recognize Bowerman’s
contributions to the University,
to the sports of track and jog
ging, to business in Oregon,
and to humanity. The family
encourages others to con
tribute to the fund through the
Foundation.

whether someone at the ASUO
agreed to distribute the
coupons
Short called the ASUO and
"wondered if it had ever been
distributed,” Moore says, and
that touched off his concern.
The Avalon Chiropractic
Health Center has a contract
which lists the ASUO as a spon
sor of the coupons, says Arthur
Ticknor of the Health Center.
The contract is with Campus
Cooperative Services of Lans
ing, Mich.
Windfall Advertising, the
sponsor named on the coupon
pamphlet, lists a Eugene ad
dress and phone. However,
after repeated attempts no one
at Windfall Advertising could be
reached by phone for comment.
One Windfall Coupon Book
has two sheets which feature
advertisers such as the Little
Ocean pet shop, Godfather's
Pizza, Roach Clip City and the
High St. Coffee Gallery. The
Health Center was not listed on
the sheets. Moore says there
may be another coupon sheet
with different advertisers.
The ASUO also was not men
tioned on the coupon sheet.
"I am fairly certain that the
ASUO did not agree to distribute
these,” Moore says of the
coupon sheets. But he adds that
one question must be ans
wered: “If Windfall put (the
ASUO) on the contract, did they
do so with the permission of an
authorized agent of the ASUO?"
Moore also wonders if an
authorized ASUO agent was
paid to distribute the sheets
But Roach Clip City and the
Little Ocean pet shop say the
ASUO was never mentioned on
their contracts with Windfall
Advertising
“Absolutely no mention was
made associating Windfall with
any student organization," says
Paul Moynihan, the pet shop's
co-owner.
