Landscape Architecture will
show a slide program highlight
ing the construction of the
Columbia River Highway on
Wednesday, June 30
The department researched
and assembled the presenta
tion, "Samuel Hill’s Civilized
Wilderness: The Columbia River
Highway, 1913-15," to be
shown at 7:30 p.m. in Lane
County Courthouse s Harris

The free program will high

Oregon's state highway system
of the late Samuel Hill, an in

man who lobbied the Oregon
Legislature for a state highway
system.
"Samuel Hill turned Oregon's
road legislation around and
achieved the construction of
one of the world’s most scenic
roads, the Columbia River
Highway," says Patricia Krier,
project director and assistant
director of the University Mu

program will provide people
with a unique historical insight
into Oregon’s growth during the
1900-15 period, she adds
It will also emphasize the
crucial role that the Columbia
River played in Oregon's
development, Krier says.
University faculty members
who assisted Krier in the project
include history professor Edwin
Bingham, and Kenneth Hel
phand, head of the landscape
architecture department Don
Hunter, director emeritus of the
University Instructional Media
Center, produced the program.
The show, for which the
department received a $1,500
grant from the Oregon Commit
tee for the Humanities, will be
shown in The Dalles June 28
and in Portland July 1, and will
tour other parts of the state this
summer as well. Krier and
