    Bach festival returns
The 1983 Bach Festival begins in Eugene
June 28, bringing together local musicians
with artists from around the country and
abroad to perform the works of Johann
Sebastian Bach and other classical com
posers.
This year's Festival consists of three musical
series and a number of special events includ
ing a trip to a vineyard, a lecture on recorded
versus live music, an outdoor Bach supper, a
critic's symposium and a Bach poster art
gallery
A series of free noon concerts begins June
28, with Eugene's Silverwood Chamber
Playere performing pieces by Francis Poulenc,
Gyorgy Ligeti, and Anton Reicha.
On June 29, Du Vent et Bois (Of Wind and
Wood), comprised of West Coast artists, will
present pieces by Francois Couperin, Thomas
Vincent, and Georg Phillip Telemann.
David Case, University guitar instructor, and
Douglas Hensley, former University student,
present a variety of classical guitar pieces
June 30.
On July 1, llkka Talvi and Judith AUer-Talvi,
the principal and assistant principal violinists
of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, per
form as soloists in Bach's Double Violin Con
certo
Alan Civil. England's internationally ac
claimed horn player, performs as a soloist with
his University master class July 1.
Noted alto soloist Alyce Rogers and baritone
Douglas Lawrence perform a duo recital July
5.
University music school professors Charles
Dowd and Edward Kam merer present "The Art
of Jazz Improvisation: Impressions of Bach
and Now" with their jazz quartet July 6.
On July 7, former Eugene bassist Jeff
Bradetich wilt perform two pieces with a string
and brass ensemble.
The Festival Brass Ensemble will perform
July 8.
The San Francisco Boy's Chorus, also per
forming in the two St. Matthew Passion con
certs, will present selections from their current
repertoire of religious and popular music July
9.
The afternoon Bach Cantata series features
BWV 111, 26, 115, 140, 129, 7, 78, and 137.
Performances will take place at 5:15 p.m., June
28 through July 1 and July 5-8.
The cantata orchestra is composed of
players from the Los Angeles Chamber Or
chestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San
Francisco, Denver and Portland Symphonies,
professional solo artists-in-residence and a
select choir of 45-50 singers.
The evening Festival series is offered July
2-3 and features Mendelssohn's St. Paul Ora
torio, conducted by Helmuth Rilling, festival
conductor and artistic director.
Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos No. 2 and 5
and Concerto in D Minor for Two Violins will be
presented in an orchestral concert July 4-5
along with Mozart's Horn Concerto.
Soprano Arleen Auger will give a Lieder
recital July 6.
An all-Bach chamber concert performs BWV
1038, 1030, 1037, 1020, and 1039 in repeat
performances July 7-8.
Performances of Bach's St. Matthew Pas
sion on July 10-11 will cap the festival.
