be Sunday afternoon in
Philadelphia.
The Lakers' victory actually
kept two playoff streaks alive.
Los Angeles also now has won
seven straight postseason road
games, a record high that dates
back to the 1980 championship
series when the Lakers beat
Philadelphia in six games
The Lakers equalled the
overall playoff record of nine
straight postseason triumphs.
But the Minneapolis Lakers es
tablished that mark over two
seasons when they won the last
postseason game in 1949 and
the first eight playoff games in
1950 enroute to the NBA title.
It was the single-season mark
of eight that the Lakers sur
passed Thursday night.
Norm Nixon also scored 24
points for the Lakers, while Ka
reem Abdul-Jabbar added 23 to
give him 100 20-plus-point
games in 105 playoff games
during his 13-year career Mi
chael Cooper scored 17 points
for Los Angeles
Julius Erving led ail scorers
with 27 points for the 76ers,
most of them on dunks or
layups Andrew Toney scored
20 points, Bobby Jones 19 and
Darryl Dawkins 16 for the 76ers
The Lakers, who averaged
118 points per game in two
four-game sweeps over Phoenix
and San Antonio, fell behind
83-68 in the third period when
Jones scored for Philadelphia at
the 5:58 mark
Then the Lakers scored 11
points in a row to start a 23-6 run
for the rest of the period, which
ended with the Lakers ahead
91-89
Philadelphia's miseries did
not end there, however, as the
Lakers poured in 14 of the
fourth quarter's first 15 points
for a 105-90 lead with 8:45
remaining in the game
The 40-9 spurt was completed
when Cooper hit a free throw
with 7:35 left to give the Lakers
their largest lead, 108-92
The closest the 76ers got
after that was the final margin of
seven as Toney and Steve Mix
hit three-point goals in the final
seconds.
Philadelphia turned a 13
3 spurt in the last 4Vi minutes
of the second quarter into a
61-50 halftime lead, its larg
est margin of the first 24
minutes
