From A»«ochrt»d Pm« Report*
Argentines launch
‘mass air attack’
FALKLAND ISLANDS
Argentine warplanes Tuesday
launched a “mass air attack" on
the British fleet supporting the
Falkland Islands invasion force
and one vessel was hit and "is in
r
difficulty," the British Defense
Ministry reported
A British news agency said
more than two ships were hit
and the badly damaged vessel
was believed to be a destroyer
Argentina claimed its pilots
struck three British frigates and
also "probably damaged" a
medium-sized transport vessel
The Defense Ministry in Lon
• -^1
don claimed Britain’s carrier
based Harrier jets shot down
three Argentine Skyhawks dur
ing furious dogfights over the
war fleet that came as Argen
tines celebrated their indepen
dence from Spain 172 years
ago
Late communiques from Ar
gentina's Joint Chiefs of Staff
said that one of the British
frigates was severely damaged
and billowing smoke
The Chiefs of Staff claimed
Argentine anti-aircraft gunners
shot down three Harriers at
tacking Stanley, the capital of
the Falklands. and acknow
ledged the loss of one Argentine
plane The British said none of
their aircraft was downed
Press Association. Britain's
domestic news agency, noted
that British Defense Secretary
John Nott had spoken of only
one ship being hit. but it said
without giving attribution that
"more than two warships' were
struck by missiles or bombs and
the one reported badly
damaged was believed to be a
"Type 42 destroyer" with a crew
of 280
Nott, in his report, did not
name the crippled vessel and^|
said no information was avail-^
able on casualties He said the
ship was in the fleet supporting
the British beachhead at San
Carlos Bay, 50 miles west of
Stanley
A British Defense Ministry
spokesman said "rescue oper
ations are in progress " He said
the stricken craft was not one of
the task force s two aircraft car
riers, the Hermes and Invincible
British ■* correspondents
aboard ships in the task force
compared the Argentine air
raids to Japanese suicide at
tacks against American war
ships toward the end of World
War fl Nott said the "Argentine
pilots are showing great^
bravery It would be foolish of^j
me to say anything else ”
Britain claimed it shot down
eight Argentine planes Monday,
bringing to 64 the number of
Argentine aircraft claimed des
troyed But Britain lost its third
major warship, the frigate An
telope, which was blown up by
an Argentine bomb that landed
in its engine room
At the United Nations. Argen
tine Foreign Minister Nicanor
Costa Mendez told the Security
Council his government was
prepared to consider a cease
fire, but British Ambassador Sir
Anthony Parsons said any call
for a truce was totally unac
ceptable as long as Argentine
troops remained
Ambassadors from several
non-aligned nations drafting a
compromise resolution indicat
ed Britain and Argentina were
close to agreement on the
proposal, which would give the
U N secretary-general seven
days to arrange a cease-fire
