Bruins capture title with ease
Three Ducks
take individual
championships
By Paul Danzar
OtltmEmmrmU
Oregon had its moments, but
it was UCLA’s day in the sun as
the Bruins ran up 146 points to
easily outdistance the rest of the
field and claim the 1982 Pacific
10 Conference track and field
championship Saturday at
Hayward Field
While the Bruins were scoring
points in all but one event on the
meet's second day, Oregon's
Jim Hill gave the hometown tans
something to cheer about when
he left Oregon State's Mark
Fricker in his wake on the final
lap of the long awaited
1,500-meter showdown
The 8,408 fans roared their
approval as Hill crossed the fin
ish line to win the race in
3:39.85. When Hill took off at the
bell entering the final lap,
Fricker faded to fourth and the
civil war matchup took a back
seat
The Ducks had other
moments,
Dean Crouser, who was voted
the meet's outstanding athlete,
followed an easy shot put win on
Friday with a meet-record 207-8
toss to win the discus on Satur
day
And David Mack broke free of
the lead pack in the 800 to win
his third consecutive Pac-10
crown
But the Bruins had all the
speed and depth they needed to
overtake Washington State,
Friday's leader, and coast to the
Eric Brown
crown. The Cougars had e
nough left Saturday to claim
second spot in the team race
with 113 points, while the
Ducks' 80.5 points was good
enough for fourth.
Arizona State, defending
champion and pre-meet favor
ite, had to settle for third place
with 94 points. The Sun Devils
just couldn't match the Bruins
balance and depth, and with
speedsters LaMont King and
Ron Brown sidelined with injur
ies, they couldn’t match the
Bruins' speed either
Eric Brown supplied the Bruin
speed with wins in the 100 and
200-meter dashes. Brown ran a
10 25 100 and a wind-aided
20 41 200 Oregon’s George
Walcott was a mild surprise,
placing fourth in the 100 and
200 with times of 10 45 and
20 79, respectively.
But it was while Hill was kick
ing to a final lap of 55 8 that the
Bruins put the lock on the title as
Steve Whitcomb followed Hill
across the line to give the Bruins
eight points they didn’t expect.
“I didn’t care about the time,”
Hill said following his victory. "I
thought with 200 to go that
Fricker would be with me.”
But Fricker was fighting what
he called "lazy legs” — a tight,
tired feeling in both legs — and
Hill had it made.
”1 was real happy with the last
lap,” Hill said “I’ve never even
run a open quarter that fast.”
If Hill was the man of the
moment, Crouser was the man
of the meet for Oregon.
Friday, he put the shot farther
on all six attempts than UCLA's
John Brenner, the second
place man. did on any of his.
Crouser's winning toss was
67-5%, a full 4 feet better than
Brenner.
Perhaps equally amazing,
though, was Crouser’s fourth
place showing in the hammer,
an event he has not competed in
since March. Crouser’s best
throw was a personal best
(201-8).
While Crouser was playing
Superman, his younger brother
Brian almost pulled off a sur
prise in the javelin. The younger
Crouser threw the javelin 266-8
on his final throw, just five
inches short of the first-place
throw.
Mack’s third 800 crown also
gave the spectators a thrill.
Mack was trapped on the inside
on the backstretch of the final
lap, but was able to find a hole,
pass leaders Rob Webster and
Pete Richardson, and cross the
finish line with three fingers —
signifying three straight Pac-10
800 crowns — raised in triumph.
The biggest disappointment
of the day for Duck fans might
have been Bill McChesney's
fifth-place finish in the 5,000

stayed with the leaders for
about two-thirds of the race,
then fell out of contention as
WSU’s Peter Koech edged

McChesney crossed the fin

never got the spurt he needed to
catch the Bruins and Cougars.
