down six Argentine fighter
bombers in a furious air-sea
battle Sunday as the Argentines
attacked Royal Navy warships
near the British beachhead on
the Falkland Islands It said
three other Argentine jets
probably were downed and one
British frigate was hit in the air

Argentina's Joint Chiefs of
Staff announced its warplanes
attacked the San Carlos landing
zone and said no details would
be released until the results
were evaluated.
The official Telam news
agency quoted military sources
as saying Argentine ground
forces had launched “a big of
fensive" to dislodge the British
who landed Friday on East
Falkland, one of the two major
islands in the South Atlantic
archipelago
Telam claimed Argentine jets
seriously damaged two British
frigates and an urfidentified Bri
tish transport ship that was un
loading supplies at San Carlos
Britain acknowledged one
frigate was damaged It said
there were several fires on the
warship, which was not named,
"and attempts are being made
to bring them under control.”
No casualty report was given
The Argentine military com
mand gave no further informa
tion in its communique and said
results of the raids were being
evaluated
There was no word from of
ficials here on the British claim
that at least six Argentine war
planes were shot down during
the air raid against the Royal
Navy fleet and three helicopters
were hit in another battle earlier
Sunday
The Defense Ministry report
ed that British Harrier jets at
tacked three Argentine
helicopters Sunday over Falk
land Sound, which separates
the two main islands of East
Falkland and West Falkland in

It said one Puma helicopter was
seen to explode, a Bell
helicopter was in flames and a
second Puma may have been
damaged
Telam quoted its unidentified
military sources as saying the
British were cut off from their
supplies "and will have to sur
render at any moment for lack of
munitions, food and (adequate)
clothing" to face the bitter
winter.
Buenos Aires newspapers
said the British troops were
outnumbered, outgunned and
pinned down
"The British are surrounded,"
one military source told The As
sociated Press "They have no
air or naval support and have
their backs to the sea Now we
will start to push them harder "
In a communique issued
before dawn Sunday, the Joint
Chiefs of Staff said Argentine
forces were acting to prevent
the British from consolidating
their beachhead
The Argentine military source
described the British Defense
ministry's claim that 5.000 Bri
tish troops were on the islands
as "fantasy " He said 800 was a
generous estimate
Between 9,000 and 10,000
Argentine troops are believed to
be on the British colony Argen
tina seized seven weeks ago
Telam said the situation
around San Carlos “is under the
control of our forces " The
privately owned news agency
DYN quoted military sources as
saying pockets of British resis
tance at San Carlos were being
mopped up by Argentine troops
A communique from the Joint
Chiefs of Staff broadcast by
Buenos Aires radio said infor
mation on ground activity in the
islands would not be as quickly
available as that of air or naval
action
